Next let’s see a lathe that makes a square peg.

same principle as a mortising bit, the square corners are cut with a broaching or chisel action. Pretty cool tho.

It might if you don’t want a blind hole.

Good point. For a blind hole, this device is a pretty interesting alternative.

Next let’s see a lathe that makes a square peg.

All you need is a 4-jaw independent chuck. Put it in the chuck sideways, face-turn one side, then re-chuck it 90 deg. rotated and face off each of the other three sides.

The blade wobbles somehow to obtain this travel. I assume it floats at the connection. Seems like that wobble would wear this thing out quickly or remove any ability to use this bit in anything but a drill press. Not that that’s a huge drawback, but it’s a negative.

Shouldn’t a hole go all the way through the metal? It didn’t look like it did to me. It seems that going all the way through something and remaining square would present a problem for this bit.

I wonder if this wuld be hard on the bearings of the milling machine? Anyone know?

You don’t always need or want to go through but I can’t see why it would be a problem.

Wouldn't a square broach work just as well and take less time?
This "drill" appears to be able to cut a blind hole that's square for the entire depth, which would be much more difficult for a broach.

I was about to say that broaching would also require a separate machine, whereas this device can be used as another step in the same machining center. However, I don't know that you can't broach in a machining center. I've never seen it done, but that doesn't mean people aren't doing it.

I used to be a machinist, and I would re-sharpen drill bits during the course of my work. I eventually got pretty good at it, but while I was learning, I often produced drill bits that drilled weird, sort of triangular holes.

Unfortunately, I never found a marketable niche for weird, sort of triangular holes. :-)

A device known to every carpenter for hundred years. Neat but not novel.

I wouldn't think so. Milling machines spindle bearings are designed to withstand both side and end load.

Chuck tried to put it in sideways but she didn’t like it.

That's kind of weird. Usually they don't get past Chuck having 4 jaws.
