SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF/99.7 Now) – It’s a question many of us ask when we go out to a restaurant. “How much should I tip?” Whether your service is good or bad, San Francisco Restaurant workers want to implement a 25% standard tip onto your bill for you. Is this fair?
Many in the food industry say “…yes, it’s about time.” However, many “foodies” are not as happy with the idea. According to an article in the San Jose Mercury News, for the most part, people, on average tip between 15% – 20% and the restaurant worker actually has to claim 15% of that to the IRS.
Opinions that sway against the increase said that “…the whole purpose of a tip is to reward service.” They feel the new tip increase should be earned and if more is needed, then they must step up their service so that the increase justifies a larger tip amount.
Not everyone is against the idea. Some have felt with the state of the nation’s economy is in, that 25% is not unreasonable. And some tip above the average already. Some went a step further to say if you want to reward service, you must start tipping the workers at fast food places as well. Most fast food workers earn minimum wage and rarely get tips
They do that in other fast food restaurants. On the drive-up window is a tip jar. I do not tip at the drive up window. I figure if I didn’t shop there they wouldn’t be able to work there. Many times my order comes to $5.99, I give them $6.00, they pass me my bagel and coffee and make no attempt to give me my change of $.01. It is not a large amount, it is the principal that they think they are entitled to my money without ever asking me.
Individual American itizens are not on the hook for the greed and screwups of gubmint, merchants, intruders, etc.
Let ‘em eat cake...Same w/taxes to Bigbromofo....let ‘em have a bake sale for their $...but watch them verrrrry closely!

Doh! I thought it was a “take a dollar, leave a dollar” cup! No wonder they always give me a funny look.
Since I have no intention of ever going back to SF have at it. But won’t this be considered to be gay on gay crime? ;-)
The funniest tip jar I’ve seen was at a seafood takaway place overseas. There was a jar on the counter with a sign that said “Staff Beer Money”.

You nailed the whole thing right there! I amuse myself at “local owner” latte stands that have tip-jars. I see it as the “pay us not to spit in your coffee” tip-jar. But I still take my chances. :-p
I guess im cheap,I tip 10% for normal service,If service was good 15% if service is exceptional 20% if service was poor,,,nothing and maybe even a note saying why.I never tip buffets or fast food.

Seriously, if they were nice to me at the counter, I’d drop a buck in that one.
I thought they were just looking for people to break their bills down in to coins...;-)
That is the way it should be done. I would rather give more to the actual person looking me in the eye and making sure my dining is a comfortable experience. If I wanted someone to just throw food at me, be sarcastic, then want a hand out I would just eat at my in-laws.
I moved to central KY from Seattle. Out here a 20% tip is like gold. I’ve actually dropped my tips down to 15% recently. And I get the distinct impression I still tip better than most people here. But I really don’t eat out that much any more.

Pay with plastic, tip with cash. 15% if the service is good
and 20% tops. Gratuity is automatically adjusted for
inflation by the price of the food. In other words just give
what you think they are worth. They can want in one hand and...
If they are creative with the sign, as well as courteous, I will leave some change.

Blast from the past...Reading this thread, I remembered Hillary’s first Senate campaign, when she stiffed a waitress in upstate NY somewheres..no tip..during a campaign stop...and Freepers all chipped in and sent her a big check. I tried to find it on search..but couldn’t...maybe someone else can find and post the link..
So a ‘tip’ is our gratitude to them, for not spitting in our coffee?
