It has been a while since I have been here but y'all always provide the BEST information!
My son is currently deployed in Afghanistan. He is in a very remote area, no internet and intermittent phone. I finally talked to him on Saturday and he said his Commander has selected him for Ranger School!!!! 1 of 6 in his Company!
He is so excited as it is something he was going to volunteer for after his deployment. His Capt. said he would go to Pre-Ranger training. The only thing he is worried about is the 5 mile run. He has not run in months. Will they pull him off of his COP to get him into shape? He can walk for miles with 80lbs on his back, but there is no place to run, if you have seen Restrepo, that is very similar to what he is doing.
He has excelled unbelievably since joining the Army. In fact they just waivered his latest promotion for his actions in combat, so I know he can do it mentally. We didn't get a chance to finish our conversation because the call dropped and who knows when we will talk again.
Anybody out there that has been through this before??
Thanks!
What unit is he in?
I just returned from Ranger School and wondered if your son ever made it there? It sucked, by the way. Haha!
That’s why they call Ranger school “The Suck.” Now that you’ve graduated, drop by ArmyRanger.com and introduce yourself there.
Many years ago, several classmates in my ROTC commissioning class (20-22), were exhorting me to go Ranger. The farthest I got was Airborne, and that was enough for me.
As a Clint Eastwood character (Dirty Harry?) stated, "you have to know your limitations." I was never a runner, though I could LRP all day long. The thought of averaging 1-2 hours of sleep (if that) for extended periods also intimidated me.
Absolutely no second thoughts have arisen from that decision.
Best wishes to all!
Unfortunately, they were so undermanned in Astan, he could not leave. In fact he was running missions up until the chopper took him out to KAF. He just returned 2 weeks ago. He comes home on block leave next month and then will be heading to WLC. The opportunity is there for him but I don’t know what he will do, right now he is very bitter about some things that went on in Astan and he is having second thoughts about his career in the military. It was quite an eventful deployment and we’ll just have to see how it all plays out.
Thanks for asking and congratulations to you!
