TAU discovers a quick injection can prevent PTSD in 60% who experience trauma

When a person suffers trauma, the body naturally increases its secretion of cortisone. Taking this natural phenomenon into account, Prof. Zohar set out to discover what a single extra dose of cortisone could do, when administered up to six hours after test subjects experienced a traumatizing event. The results, which will be published in the journal European Neuropsychopharmacology in October 2011, indicate that the likelihood that the patient will later develop PTSD is reduced by 60 percent.

This could be hugh.

'Course the people who don't get PSTD after this treatment won't necessarily be able to appreciate what they may - or may not - have suffered without this preventative measure . . .

I wonder how this would do for helping rape and assault victims?

I wonder if it helps those who already have PTSD?

I thought PTSD was a mental manifestation due to events occuring in war zones like Vietnam that the soldier was unable to deal with after returning home?

What do they do, give cortizone injections to every soldier upon their return to the U.S.?

I don't think this was a very well written article.....

Wish I had known this in 1977 when I went through a 5.5 earthquake. In the immediate hours after the traumatic event I treated myself with large amounts of Scotch. It worked for the short time but did not help in the long term. For years I’d be extremely alarmed at the slightest tremor. On second thought it could have been the blended stuff. At the time I did not appreciate the pleasures of the single malt :).

No, they want to give the cortisone shot soon (as in, within 6 hours) after a trauma. My bad, for not including that fact in the excerpt.
