The World Series was rained out yesterday, so we went to the movies instead. And were glad we did! This is our second noteworthy directorial debut for 1941, the first being Orson Welless Citizen Kane back in May. The review mentions that Johns pop Walter Huston plays a bit part in The Maltese Falcon. Im going with the DAs stenographer,

The Maltese Falcon was Sydney Greenstreet's first appearance on film (he played Kasper Gutman, "The Fat Man"), and he stole the film despite the accompanying cast of Bogart and Peter Lorre. He was 62.
Greenstreet previously appeared on stage. The year after The Maltese Falcon, he played Signor Ferrari, owner of the rival nightclub ("The Blue Parrot") to Rick's Café Américain in Casablanca. Not a bad start to a short career on screen.

I was forced to watch this horrible movie in high school. I will never forget those wasted minutes. The only time I thought it was interesting was when the film broke. I was hoping it was part of the film.

My favorite line is when Capt. Renault asks Rick what brought him to Casablanca...
To: Eric in the Ozarks
I came to Casablanca for the waters.
The waters? What waters? We're in the desert.
I was misinformed.

Agreed, great line.

A great movie, but not as great as “The Big Sleep”.

“The Maltese Falcon” is at the top of my list of Favorite Films. It is slick, cynical with just a breath of hopefulness, and has some of the eras best actors.
