The Maltese Falcon was Sydney Greenstreet's first appearance on film (he played Kasper Gutman, "The Fat Man"), and he stole the film despite the accompanying cast of Bogart and Peter Lorre. He was 62.

Greenstreet previously appeared on stage. The year after The Maltese Falcon, he played Signor Ferrari, owner of the rival nightclub ("The Blue Parrot") to Rick's Café Américain in Casablanca. Not a bad start to a short career on screen.
