My letter to ESPN Re: The Firing of Hank Williams, Jr
Self | 3 October, 2011 | Self

Posted on 10/03/2011 5:30:38 PM PDT by Howie66

I am writing to express my displeasure with the decision of ESPN to pull Hank Williams, Jr. from your Monday Night Football opening.

Mister Williams did nothing more than express his opinion on a television show. The last time that I checked, we still have a United States Constitution (I served to defend it in the Marine Corps) and we still have the freedom to express our displeasure with our government and our elected officials.

There never seemed to be an issue with that when President Bush was in office.

Since you choose to ignore Mr. Williams right to free speech, I will no longer watch your broadcasts in my home. Many of my friends share my views on this.

May your ratings follow Mr. Obama's poll numbers.

Sincerely,

X.X.Xxxxx XXXXXXXX, Texas USA

I guess I do too. While I have every song and spoken word Hank Williams Sr. has recorded in my library and not one note of Hank Williams Jr. I have deleted every ESPN station from the programming my TiVo receives.

ESPN has the right to fire Williams - and probably should have, because, frankly, Hank’s comments were offensive.

My problem with ESPN is that they’re partisan as hell. Who’s the idiot basketball sportscaster who cries out “Obama!” every time a player gets a slam dunk?

In my opinion - and it’s just mine - politics has no place in sports. ESPN certainly has the right to disagree. But hopefully, fans can express their opinion by simply not watching.

Gretchen Carlson started this off with her silly PC “disavow” comment at the end of the interview.

It wasn’t that big a deal, but by expressing the wish for FOX and her fellow presenters to disassociate from Hank’s comments, she made it into something a lot bigger.

And into something something it was not.

You can read about and see the video of it here.

It was really blown way out of proportion. However, I guess that questioning Ubama is not to be tolerated.

Bravo.

I just deleted all my bookmarks to ESPN. I would urge all Freepers to do the same.

Foxsports has everything I need for sports news.

ESPN just died to me. And I just found a great reason to get me some Kentucky Headhunters music.

YEEEE-HAAAAAAWWWW !!!!

ESPN hasn't violated Hank WIlliams Jr.’s right to free speech by excluding him from tonight's broadcast. ESPN has exercised its own rights by disciplining an employee and voicing its own opinions.

That said, I tend to support Mr. Williams’ views over ESPN's.

BTW, judging from the commentary I normally hear on ESPN’s evening broadcasts, everyone at ESPN is pretty much over the blood alcohol limit by now. Letters and emails of protest may as well wait until tomorrow.

Hanks comments were offensive? How so? I sure as hell didn’t see that.

The last time that I checked, we still have a United States Constitution (I served to defend it in the Marine Corps) and we still have the freedom to express our displeasure with our government and our elected officials.

Sure, and we also have the obligation to face up to the consequences of what we say, as the Dixie Chicks discovered. Williams has no Constitutional right to have ESPN air his song before every MNF telecast and quite frankly the whole tiresome ritual in this country of comparing any politician we don't like to a monstrous dictator who put millions to death is ridiculous. There are probably children in the US who think Hitler was just some politician their parents didn't like.

I didn't catch the MNF opening tonight but they could do a lot worse than to go back to this.

Probably got a raise and a day off with pay. I’ve something like twenty pictures of Bush being bashed by protestors. Sick. So whenever I see a post somewhere when Obamalamadingdong is characterized and people get mad, I post a couple of picture of Bush the same way and say “Oh Yeah?”

Great letter!

I also blame FOX for this because they’ve had HWJ on in the past and know his outspokenness on politics. He was initially on to speak about a music collection of his father’s. They baited him.....and, as usual, he was HONEST (which I love).

JMHO

Rainbow colored uniforms for LGBT awareness month?

The Chickifying of the NFL . . . It's all over the place . . . yesterday's Browns game had pink shoes, pink laces, pink patches on helmets, shirts, pants, and the referees had pink lanyards with pink whistles . . . SONAFABEECH!

I have no respect for any organization that would promote anything that would help Susan Koman in their Planned Predator donation farce.

To think that lots of that money is going to be given to help kill unborn and newly born American citizens by that disgusting abortion provider makes me sick.

That crap is ok, but Hank Williams, Jr's comment was not . . . sick!

But, likewise, I don't watch MNF anymore since they moved from ABC and buried themselves somewhere in the high numbered channels.
