Don’t wear short skirts — you could get raped.
That’s essentially the advice the New York Police Department is giving young women in one Brooklyn neighborhood following a slew of unsolved sexual attacks in the past few months.
The warnings are being met with outrage, with residents saying police should be focusing on catching the suspects, not criticizing women for what they choose to wear.
One South Park Slope resident told the Wall Street Journal about an encounter she had with an NYPD officer this past week:

I think I’ll start with the letter “I”.
It should not have to take the NYPD to know that short skirts and immodest dress in general are an invitation to trouble. Our forefathers in this land knew better than to dress like drunken heathen. And its not just an Islamic thing. People can find in their Bibles condemnation of immodesty in clothing.
While women wearing short skirts shouldn’t be blamed, there is a certain amount of common sense required.
After a series of rapes in Ann Arbor, police suggested that women not be out wandering the streets alone at night. The NAGS went ballistic that such “misogynist” comments could come from city officials.
If it were me I would have issued a second statement. “Fine, you’re on your own. I suggest you arm yourselves.”

Seems to me a long skirt could be more hazardous because (1) she could trip on it and (2) a would-be rapist could sieze the hem.
It’s just not as easy.
A long skirt just keeps getting in the way.
