Good morning gardeners. Fall is in the air here in East Central Mississippi on this last day of September. It has been beautiful weather for cleaning up outside and taking care of the yard. Our daytime temperatures have been in the 70s with an occasional bump up into the 80s and the overnight lows are ranging from the 40s to the 60s. While I am waiting for Spring to arrive I will be occupied by continuing to hone my skills at home brewing.

If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

I hope all your Summer gardens did well this year and your Fall gardens prosper.

Those are Oriental Cabbage, It for making Kimchi.. Yea Yea I know UCK... It’s for my son.... He likes rotten cabbage..The recipe says they fit in the Quart jars better then the normal cabbage.. I am going to try and make the Kimch and then after 10 days I will put it in the canner so it’s safe to eat. There again it’s got vinegar so it should be ok to eat. I am a canning nut, It’s not worth the risk. There are also some Hot pepper in another pic. They also go in the Kimchi.. I have never made it before so this is a first!

SOIL: That is south FL sand... Not much in it but it drains well.. This garden had sheep on it for 15 years so there is a lot of organic matter in the soil. I had to use a lot of lime last season to get the PH up but this year it’s a perfect 7.0..

And yes, I brought a shovel to do in the nasty thing - my father (86 yrs old) brought the axe...he won!
I’m getting the shot gun!

Did you say "snake"? This was found in the chicken coop:

You know that old saying...Never bring a shovel to a snake fight. My mother use a garden hoe to whack em because it had a longer handle then a axe...

I just finished off a pint of Pickled Vegetables that I purchased at a local Artisan Show here in Benderville. It is Diced or Shredded Cabbage, Carrots, Green, Peppers,Onions in White Vinegar, Sugar, Pickling Spice and Salt...

Here is a update on our venture into having our hardwood floors refinished. The floor guy put the final coat down on last Friday and we first set foot on them after Church Sunday and the sloooow process of moving back in is progressing. Just one gouge under the bookcase so far but the biggest threat was moving the old 356# Sony TV back in was solved when Lady Bender said... “Let’s buy a new LCD Sony” and Shazzam it was done!

Lady Bender has POWER, as well as smarts, despite her size. I like her style!

As for us and the saga of the front door. It’s ordered. 1/2 has been paid. I’m not sleeping. This is a complicted project and I worry constantly. For instance: should I also change the entry hall floor inside? Before, or after, they install the door? They say after, but I don’t know how that will work. I’ll have to accept their word.

In the mean time, they now want to saw off the first 8 inches of my brick front porch and replace the edge with a concrete border. I tripped over the edge of the porch a couple of years ago and fell flat on my face. The brick pavers extend about an inch over the edge of the foundation creating a little lip that can catch a toe and send you flying. I thought that I could just use builder’s mastic and apply pavers across the front to eliminate the lip and then grout the seams. I even found appropriate pavers, but my concrete guy says no and wants to eliminate the lip by pouring a whole new edge to the porch. But, it will be a different color, of course. Now, how will that look?

Here is the $64,000 question for you: are those kids helping you move back in? Doing some of the heavy lifting?

Everybody posting about snakes, please identify the area of the country where you are living. I might decide to move, and I don’t want to go anywhere where I might run into those slithery critters.

Yes, the Martin houses do look good. That is why mine is still up, desspite no birds in residence. The collapsible pole has long since rusted together so I can’t bring it down for cleaning. The sparrows won’t even nest there anymore. LOL. It still is a nice accent in the landscape.

The kids said they would love to help but they had all joined the French Foreign Legion or something...

Realistically, Wisconsin has very wet autumns...

You don't say? It's been raining for 2 solid weeks. Dry today, TG, but too cold to work outside.

I'm sorry to hear you've been sick. I missed the reason, but I seem to remember that you lost your voice? I lost mine earlier this year, and I couldn't talk for 2 weeks. My daughter was visiting and she gave me a box of "Organic Lemon Echinacea Throat Coat" Caffeine Free Herbal Tea put out by Traditional Medicinals. She's a singer and fights laryngitis periodically. Unfortunately, she gave me the tea after I was already well, so I can't vouch for it. But, she swears by it, and she makes part of her living off of her voice.

I would NOT cut the bricks back for concrete but I might allow a contrasting color brick. I think your idea is the best option if it doesn’t make the step to narrow It will be a lot less money but I would get a tile guy to look at it...

Oh, Ellendra. I missed your post #48. I am so sorry and I hope you will be better soon.

My son in law had something like that and he had to undergo having his throat scraped every 6 months for several years. He seems to have gone into remission now, and I don’t think he’s been in the hospital for a couple of years. His voice sounds much better now, although it is still a little raspy. He was on SS disabilty for a while, but he is back at work now and has been for about 8 years.

His was an autoimmune disease and a reaction to a virus that we all carry. He just suddenly was unable to fight it and his throat developed nodules. So, stay as healthy as you can — good nutrition, etc. Hopefully your body will kick in and fight this bug into submission. I’ll add you to my prayer list.

There’s something wrong with the muscles in my throat, so I’m not sure that would help, but it’s worth a try!

The “pinched laryngeal nerve” theory seems to match the symptoms best. It’s gotten to where I have trouble swallowing anything, and the whole right side of my neck hurts. It feels better for a little while after my chiropractor twists me in knots, but that doesn’t last long. My chiro did point out that the laryngeal nerve passes through the part of my spine that we already knew was messed up, so this may just be a new twist to my long-running alignment issues.

Anyway, I’ll see if I can find the tea and try it.

It won’t make the step too narrow. It is just one step up to a flat porch about 44 feet long and 8 feet deep. I think the driveway has sunk a bit over the years so the step up to my porch (verandah) is just a tad too high. I don’t remember it being high (25 years ago) but I really tripped on it and fell flat. Of course, I don’t step as high as I did 25 years ago, either.

My concrete guy (who is re-pouring a new threshhold for the front door) wanted to trim the brick back and pour this border because one of the brick pavers has a chipped front edge. He said that he could pour a new edge and front — like a curb. I’m not sure that I like that. But the concrete guy says that the elevation is no longer code and neither is the overlap that I tripped on.

There’s something pioneers used to do to keep snakes away. They would keep a few pigs in a circle around the house, (and sometimes other buildings), so the pigs would eat the snakes before they could get close. Pigs love snakes, even rattlers. They’ll eat them like spaghetti (according to someone I know who has kept hogs for that purpose).

Try a health food store, or look it up on line.
