Ten years ago tonight, President George W. Bush addressed a Joint Session of Congress, nine days after the 9/11 attacks. C-SPAN has archived video from the evening. On the podium were Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert and President Pro Tempore Robert Byrd.
I started following politics with seriousness around 1970, when I was a teenager. I can say without any hesitation that this speech by Pres. Bush on Sept 20, 2001, was the greatest political speech I have ever seen.
I was in New York that day. I had flown a red-eye from CA to go to Ground Zero and try and volunteer. I stood about 100 feet from the rubble, which was still burning. I could taste the dust, and I can still smell the awfulness today.
My services were not needed, so I went to stay with my uncle in Jersey. We watched the speech in his living room. I have never been so moved by a speech in my entire life. I felt God’s presence.
George W. Bush was the right man at the right time for that occasion.
“We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail” was my tagline for a very long time. I believe he said that during that speech.
he did, very close to the end of it.
Bush’s speech filled the country with confidence. We started to believe that the US would be OK. I’ll never forget. God bless George W.
Oh God... I tried watching it but couldn’t even get past Mrs. Beamer without choking up completely.
I hear ya, RingerSIX.
Bush's legacy!
I don’t know how to explain it, but I never should have tried watching that earlier, because I’ve been an emotional wreck ever since. I saw the introduction of Mrs. Beamer, and I was admiring her composure and strength, when I broke down. And I’m pretty sure I’m worthless for the rest of the day. This isn’t like me. :( I’m not usually the emotional type. But for whatever reason.... that got me like I haven’t been gotten in a long time.
I hope things are well for her and their children today.
Thank God we had President Bush in September 2001.
Agreed, Churchill.
Surprising...12 remarks and only one thread pisser...and it knows what it is, so I’m not pinging it. I don’t feed trolls.
It was scarcely more than a week after the attack and the details were inaccurate....e.g. the President said that several hundred Brits were killed - actually 67 and that was the highest number of casualties other than US citizens. The number of countries who lost citizens was 115 - the President said, I think, eighty something.
Just emphasized the magnitude of the situation..it was, of course, months before the true death toll was known.
Also wondered where VP Cheney was, till I realized he was being kept in a safe place.
I would put that speech up with some very rare company as one of the top few or several speeches ever given. As much trouble as Bush was given over his verbal stumbles from time to time, he was magnificent that night. He changed the outlook and lifted the spirits of the nation.
He was absolutely the right man at the right place in time.
Amen to that.
