PADUCAH, Ky. -- Members of a sect of Amish living in Graves County said they will not comply with a Kentucky law requiring them to display a bright orange triangle on their horse-drawn buggies and feel just as safe with reflective tape instead.

Nine Amish men who refused to display the triangle were ordered to jail this week for also refusing to pay court-imposed fines over the matter.

Eli Zook, a member of the Old Order Swartzentruber sect and one of the men sent to jail, told The Paducah Sun on Friday he feels safe with the tape and two red lights on his buggy.

The men object to the triangles because the bright color violates their modesty code. Zook said the triangle is misused and is not just for slow-moving vehicles.

We came across one of those horse-drawn Amish buggies on a back road in Hart County, Kentucky. Don’t tell the Amish in Graves County, but the Hart County buggy had an orange warning triangle on the back.

“...told The Paducah Sun on Friday he feels safe with the tape and two red lights on his buggy.”

Two red lights are certainly better than a triangle at night.

The problem ain’t the locals, the problem is people like me who are from out of town and was not expecting to see the buggie until I was right up on it!! Locals are used to it. People like me are a bit startled. That is why it is good for them to have the triangle.

Forget the orange triangles.

What they need is a really, really loud exhaust to be safe.

Just ask most motorcyclists.

A horse with really loud farts?

They might decide to sell unpasteurized milk which will necessitate the FDA sending in their own SWAT team to take them down Gestapo-style!

There is liberty and then there is stupidity. I really wish they would put the triangles on the buggies just so I don’t, or anyone else does not hit them at dusk or night. I really makes a difference on back roads. I respect their religion but God wants them to be safe. I mean come on!!

They offered to put on reflective tape, but the authorities rejected that idea. All our school buses have reflective tape and it shines like crazy when your headlights hit it.

Hey Lazlo, maybe you could go slower at night, since you know there are Amish neighbors. Watch for the reflective tape they use, or the lanterns. It’s no different than watching out for deer.

Slow down.

They already did. The Fed’s ran a sting on one Amish farm for doing just that. But in Washington state it’s legal to sell unpasteurized milk. Go figger.

The deer must scare the dickens out of you then. They have red reflectors and reflective tape, you have headlights and a gas peddle. Just slow down and be alert, like watching for deer.

I once saw an amish kid up on the Iowa/Missouri border in a single seat buggy being pulled by 4 Clydesdales at a full gallup.

He was a badass.

I’m with you. I have to buy insurance, pay for registration, and display a current tag on my license plate if I want to use public roads. Why should they be exempt? If they don’t want to display a triangle, they can always stop using public roads.

Morons,, where did they get the idea that somehow 1820 is moral? They are modern as hell for THAT era. Why is an orange triangle so bad?

They want to ride a black buggy, at horse speed, on modern roads. How about a passing thought for how they destroy peoples lives when they don’t see them and plow into em with a car.
