Archie is going from comic to culture warrior again, as the Archie Comics universe fields praise and scorn over a gay wedding.
After a pair of straight weddings -- both strangely involving Archie, though in his dreams -- drew national attention, the publisher behind the popular stories has confirmed that its making room for someone else to walk down the aisle: Kevin Keller, the series first openly-gay character.
Kevin followed in his father's footsteps and is returning to Riverdale as a war hero, but that's not all Its Kevins wedding day! reads a news release from Archie Comic Publications, promoting an upcoming issue of "Life With Archie."
In this offshoot series, which runs glimpse-into-the-future storylines based on the lives of Archie, Betty and Veronica, readers soon will be able to discover how Kevin met Mr. Right.
Its the first time the Archie universe, which depicts the lives of teenagers in the fictional town of Riverdale, has touched upon the topic of gay marriage. But the plot is drawing mixed reactions from critics over whether or not it has a place in series read by those of all ages.
I think its great that the reality of Americas loving couples are being portrayed in as many places as possible, said Evan Wolfson, the founder and president of Freedom to Marry, a national movement for marriage equality.

I’m thinking Jughead might object.
Of course it would be a veteran. I’m calling it right now that Archie is going to have a fling with a guy before the end of this decade.
They should have pulled the plug on this series years ago.
The most noble, honorable character is always gay.
Will anyone care?
Will anyone care?
They’re all 90 years old! Who cares?
Will anyone care?
My thoughts exactly. Who actually reads Archie Comics anymore? I haven't read one in at least 30 years, and even way back then they were dull and outdated.
Can you imagine the impact if all Freepers were to boycott Archie Comics?
Does anybody read this anymore? I suppose the three people who do should speak up.
lol. I don’t believe one FREEPER reads that. The truly might be a who cares moment because they sell what five mags a year?
Up until a few years ago my kids read them.
They display the Archie’s Digest, Jughead, Betty & Veronica mini tabloid comics at the checkout line of the grocery store.
They’re targeted at preteens.
Question, you think when the writer wrote “Beat Off” he giggled to himself? The publisher couldn’t had a straight face when this was approved to go to print.
FYI.. Betty? Not Guilty.
About 55 years ago my friends and I came across an X-rated Archie comic book. Without going into details it was the best Archie comic ever written. I wish I could get my hands on that again...
I honestly had no idea that the strip was still being written. Guess I need to take more of an interest in the print media.
Even if few people read these comics anymore, the point here is that they are trying to normalize homosexual marriage and homosexuality through these comics.
I’m sure at least one of the two readers of Archie’s will object.
