An interesting recent paper confirms that most gay men with one main partner for a given year also have concurrent casual sexual relationships.
The paper presents good data on the number of gay partnerships per year, confirming previous findings by others, but what is new are data about gay relationships per year when there is also a main partner.
Contrary to the stereotype, the typical number of sexual partners per year per person in the SSA community is not hundreds but about three. If there was no main partner the figure was five. The result for bisexuals was 2.5 partners. If a man who had sex with men had a main partner (68% of the sample), the typical number of casual partners in a given year was about 2. This means, as has been anecdotally clear for a long time, that the norm, even with a partner to whom one is committed above all others, is not sexual exclusivity. But this paper appears to be the first giving a high-quality, quantitative result.
The philosophical and cross-cultural ideal for marriage has traditionally been sexual exclusivity. But sexual exclusivity is not what is meant by gay committed relationships.
If a homosexual man says he committed to one man in any given year, it means he is typically having sexual relationships with three different men.
It is not easy to compare these figures directly with those for heterosexuals, because it is traditional to use a different basis in studies of heterosexuals - the percentage of people with concurrent partnerships in a given year.
However it would be a good rule of thumb that a gay man with a main partner has a few other relationships in a given year, but a heterosexual man would most commonly have no concurrent relationships.

A different take on the meaning of “main man.”
Well, that's pretty close to being monogamous. [/s]
...and to think I almost posted this to "Breaking News".....
I assume this is based on mounting evidence?
You won’t find a gay (committed or not) without grindr on his phone. Probably his most used app.
Yecchhhhh!!! That’s just nasty.
.....but gay men contribute so much to society. /s>

I have a sense that it’s a bad idea but I’ll ask anyway - What is ‘grindr?’
You've lucky to get any work done.
Two of them are tolerable provided they are at opposite ends of the office.
One of them will be for all practical purposes invisible except he'll always get around to propositioning all the other heterosexual males ~ usually more than once ~ a week.
I learned this weekend after seeing a gay fellow use it.
It is an app that identifies those “willing and looking” in your local area. It ties into GPS and displays a map of potential hookup partners.
This fellow was in town for one night and found a partner within minutes of starting his search. No gay bar needed.
First, I don’t believe the numbers are that low. I think it may depend on the age demographic as to how many hookups there are. The younger and hotter they will be having waaaay more partners.
Second this is not a surprise to anyone who knows the danger of the gay lifestyle and why marriage should never be redefined for homosexuals. The whole point of the gay lifestyle is guilt-free sex anytime, anywhere, with anyone. That is why ‘committed’ gays have a ‘Thursday night off’ policy - even when they attempt to be monogamous, they can’t. They have to still be able to have sex with other people. Gay marriage jsut will not work because monogamy is totally not what homosexuality is about at its core.
Statistics are funny things. I once worked with a ‘gay’ man who’s husband was ‘gay’ also. What are the odds of that!
Perhaps it’s because there is nothing sacred, special, or purposeful, in a gay relationship.
Kinda like Obama....
Oh gawd...don't turn me into ATTACK WATCH!!!
Please...I pay my taxes!!!

I have a feeling even these numbers are low; all the other studies I've read have much higher average numbers. But even if these figures are a somewhat accurate average, still.... It's clear the "gay life" is dangerous and dirty. And life threatening. And NOT something that that should be promoted to children as normal, natural, or one that "gets better".
Oh you’re already a goner. I can’t wait to pay to report you. Ain’t America great?
