Hunters and their dogs have officially broken nearly one hundred years of no dove hunting in Iowa. Doves have been protected in Iowa since 1918. In a bill regarding raccoons, the dove hunting was quietly added. The majority of Iowans oppose the dove hunting season that runs September 1st - November 9th. Voices of that majority went unheard or ignored in favor of the new law.

Shades of the Passenger Pigeon which went extinct just a few years before this ban was enacted.
Obviously that's a joke, but dove hunting isn't as easy as you might think. But you've got to weigh it against the revenue generated from dove hunters. Virtually 100% of forestry, natural resource, game preservation funds, etc, come from hunting licenses, taxes on ammo, etc.
Also, one has to consider what happens to a game animal where the population goes unchecked. Animals dying from overpopulation, disease and starvation are a pathetic sight.
How about this, .22 shorts ~ single shot ~ hand reload.
That's more sporting. Probably 10 boxes per dove!
Dove are not songbirds. They are migratory foul.
doves are the dirtiest damn birds, next to seagulls...their crap will eat the paint off of your car, and it kills pine trees...shoot ‘em..
Yep, anybody knows you don't make a meal out of dove. But put a little fajita seasoning on that breast and wrap a strip of bacon around it; then put several of those on skewers and grill them and you've got some GREAT appetizers.
Quite right, and tasty ones at that!
I prefer to ambush them at water holes right at dusk. The bird-to-shell ratio is much better than pass shooting on the wing.
They are easier to shoot if you call them pigeons instead of doves. The Mrs. and I take pity on a nesting pair which has returned to our porch every spring since the last of our kids went off to college. We enjoy seeing them take turns nesting, raise their young and then fly off at the end of the spring to return the next year. I wouldn’t have the heart to shoot them.
Best Grilled Dove
Sent in by Lawrence.
~ dove breasts, skinned
~ 1 bottle Italian dressing or your favorite marinade
OR use
~ 1/4 cup olive oil
~ 1/4 cup lemon juice
~ salt and pepper
~ garlic cloves, crushed
~ bacon
~ onions, cut into wedges
~ jalapeno peppers, sliced, optional
Soak the breasts in saltwater overnight.
Remove the meat and drain.
Place the meat in a large zip lock bag and add the Italian dressing, your favorite marinade or mix the olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste together adding the garlic if desired and pouring over the meat.
Seal and refrigerate at least an hour. Longer is better for more flavor.
Remove the meat and lay a wedge of onion on it and wrap entire thing with ½ slice of bacon. Secure with toothpicks.
Place bone side down and grill over medium-high heat until the bacon is fully cooked.
Remove from the heat and let rest about 5 minutes before serving.
Enjoy.
“Substitute a slice of jalapeno pepper in place of the onion or add with the onion. Also try using different spices in the marinade like chili powder, barbeque spice or Worcestershire sauce. Dont overcook your doves! Medium to medium rare is ideal for doves. Make sure the bacon is fully cooked.” - Lawrence
ps; please excuse the pee-cee
Who thinks doves are songbirds?
It's not like sitting alone in a stand for hours.
Your skills are on display for all to see.
And yes, it takes a limit to make a meal.
The Texas dove is best when the breast is bacon-wrapped with a jalapeno pepper inside.
Now a White-Winged Dove is almost the size of a pigeon.
It's unsportsmanlike to shoot doves while they are sitting !
I think he was suggesting a more challenging way to wing shoot them. ;)
Bacon around the dove breast makes the meat tasty and serves as a barometer. When the bacon is crispy, the breast is cooked well enough.
Cooked up a batch this weekend wrapped first with some hatch pepper, then with a slice of peppered bacon.
Pulled the meat off the bone and used as fajita meat with guac and pico.
The rest of my doves will be used later this year when we make gumbo.
LOL ~ take a drum with you.
Funniest thing is when you pattern doves on you they stay patterned. They'd fly out of their way to follow us and poop on our car.
Went on for years.
Then we had the eagle build a nest........
I guess I’m like you Joe. We’ve fed many of them and listened to them coo. Iowa protected them for many years..guess the money outweighed the good.
