Reese Witherspoon is recovering after being struck by a car while jogging in Santa Monica on Wednesday morning. The 35-year-old Oscar-winning actress was running across an unmarked crosswalk around 11 a.m. when an 84-year-old woman failed to slow down and struck her.
According to NBC L.A., Santa Monica Police spokesman Sgt. Richard Lewis said Witherspoon, "suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital for medical treatment." The "Water for Elephants" star was discharged a short time later and spent the night at home recovering from the incident.
Lewis said the unidentified driver of the vehicle, who was driving 20 mph at the time, was interviewed at the location and released after getting a citation for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
Witherspoon, who received the Generation Award at this year's MTV Movie Awards, recently added another title to her long Hollywood resume when she became the face of the European fashion label Lindex. According to E! Online, the brand's marketing director said the Southern belle was picked because she is "positive, warm and full of energy."
Witherspoon made headlines the morning before her accident with the release of excerpts from her cover story in October's Marie Claire, in which she discussed her March marriage to agent Jim Toth.
"I was hard on myself when I got divorced. And until I got remarried, I don't think I realized how stressed I was," Witherspoon said about her split from actor Ryan Phillippe in 2006. "I don't think I recognized how anxious I was about being a single parent. ... Now I feel a great sense of relief and an incredible amount of support from my husband. I got very lucky, and he's wonderful. And so wonderful with my children. I'm very blessed."
LOL!
Good question.
“First there is a crosswalk, then there is no crosswalk, then there is.”
Is there a more hittable woman on Earth? I think not....
btw...how do you get hit by a car going 20mph?.....
She looks pretty good considering she just got hit by a car, dontcha think?
Um, she’s 36 actually. But you were close...
“btw...how do you get hit by a car going 20mph?”
Slowly?
I think that's the single saddest thing I've ever read on Free Republic.
She’s about 35. I hate when woman say that they are “single mothers” as if the father doesn’t do ANYTHING. Ryan Phillippe is not dead and I see a ton of pictures with the kids in various magazines and things. It just gets to me about that. I think that if a woman says that it is hard to be a single mother than give the kids to the father immediately. I have never heard of a father saying it is tough to be a single father. It just gets to me.....just the words “single mother”.
Most 84 year olds don't know what an iPod IS! < /badhumor >
But it is a legal pedestrian crossing at a corner, marked or not. Back when I was a serious runner I never assumed a driver would yield, though. She probably didn't look in that direction first before proceeding. Glad to hear she's going to be OK, and maybe other runners will take a hint.
No doubt you'd hit it (as would I) like a .
Reminds me of the joke about the snail who was hit by a turtle at a busy intersection.
When asked if he had the green light, he wasn’t sure,
cause it all happened so fast.
Cited for failing to slow down for an unmarked crosswalk? Sounds like Reese should have received the jaywalking citation instead.
Bet you a dollar she was listening to her iPod at the time.
There was a really bad movie named "The Adventures of Rockie and Bullwinkle."
Rockie and pal went to court and the Judge declared that there was a provision in the law that stated famous people are above the law.
The most pathetic thing is it is true in most cases.
My dad said he felt like a dirty old man in his late 40’s taking my cousin to his High School drama practices - not for oogling the 16 year olds, but their 36 year old mothers.
It was a Zen crosswalk...It's Hollywood
