A PILL costing less than £3 a day is being hailed as the biggest breakthrough in stroke prevention in 50 years.
The drug, which slashes the risk of suffering a stroke by over a third, will help more than a million Britons.
Pradaxa is now available for use in the UK. In trials it was found to significantly reduce the risk of a stroke in patients with an irregular heartbeat, known as atrial fibrillation. This is one of the main causes of strokes.
The drug, taken twice a day at a cost of £2.52, already prevents thousands of deaths each year from blood clots after hip or knee replacement surgery. Now European regulators have given the makers of the drug permission to use it for the prevention of strokes in patients with AF, who have one or more risk factors such as having already suffered a stroke.

"granny should just take a pain pill"
He said " Pain KILLER" , as in kill her.
Another expensive pharmaceutical that could be replaced with a 2 cent pill like aspirin.
My doctor keeps pushing Zetia on me and I keep not taking it. I read a study 2 years ago where it scored the same as the placebo. I told the doctor about it, he said but it won’t do any harm to take it. Not doing any harm is not a good reason to take it.
I stand corrected.

Ping the list.

Gee, I don't know, this stuff has more side effects than a Manson visit.
“Aspirin works too, Im told.”
Studies have been mixed on the effects. Buffered Bayer aspirin (buffered with magnesium) showed the best prevention against heart attacks, which was due to the magnesium, not the salicylic acid.
Nasty potential side effects, though. Aspirin complications cause more visits to ER every year than any other medication, mostly due to stomach bleeding.
Ginger and garlic are blood thinners. I buy crystallized ginger at Asian stores and eat some after every meal. I love the stuff. My doctor agrees.
That said, if one has A Fib and can’t be kept in normal sinus rhythm they’d better do something because they are a stroke or heart attack waiting to happen.
My meds keep me in normal sinus rhythm so my doc says my stroke risk is essentially no greater than the general population. But I figure foods that lower the clotting factor are still a good idea.
I have a Jewish doctor in NY (DR Rosenthald, FOX News Sunday morning) One chocolate bar a week reduces the chance of stroke by, I forget 40-50%. Sometimes I have more than a bar (62% cocoa)
