ERIS: World's first realistic simulation of the formation of the Milky Way
YouTube ^ | August 22, 2011 | cscsch

For almost 20 years astrophysicists have been trying to recreate the formation of spiral galaxies such as our Milky Way realistically. Now astrophysicists from the University of Zurich present the world's first realistic simulation of the formation of our home galaxy together with astronomers from the University of California at Santa Cruz. The new results were partly calculated on the computer of the Swiss National Supercomputing Center (CSCS) and show, for instance, that there has to be stars on the outer edge of the Milky Way.

See also the interview with Lucio Mayer from the University of Zurich explaining the relevance of this research work.

Isn’t there supposedly a black hole at the center of the Milky Way and if so, did it or did it not figure in the formation of the galaxy? Or any spiral galaxy.

Yup. There is, in fact, a supermassivie black hole at the center of this and every other galaxy that is observable. It has been proven by measuring the speed of the orbit of stars near the center of each galaxy - the stars whip around something invisible at blinding speed and sometimes lose streams of material to the black hole. If you watch how fast the middle dot is spinning in the video, I believe they did use the black hole in their equations.

Fascinating stuff.

Well...this brings up a fascinating 'chicken or the egg' question as relates to the video and the timeline they propose.

Bringing Order out of Chaos would seem to violate the Second Law of Thermodynamics -- unless there is an Organizing Principle outside the system. I do not see Discordianism as a serious thing at all. But I see an organized Universe, and I know that God exists. And I see a project called ERIS showing how the Milky Way became organized and I see science showing me that God exists.

It's just physics. Sheesh. Lighten up. Gravity just works. No deities required. No thermodynamic laws are broken by some matter being drawn toward other matter and going into orbit.

Yeah, but if I had to guess, I would say that the BH forms early on and creates a huge gravity well which then causes more matter to be drawn into the area, whch then creates an even bigger gravity well - so on and so on... A small cluster of stars with one really big one that collapses and becomes a BH can then become an even larger gravity well that draws in more and more stars as the eons pass.

Zurich, huh. Makes sense that they’d present it as a clockwork.

Funny response to the YouTube video: “Can we see it in real time?”

That was my thought as well. It would take a massive gravity well or singularity to initiate the clumping of matter from such huge distances. More than could be expected in a more spontaneous and black hole-less event. And since there were plenty of stars at that time anyway, I imagine there were a goodly number of black holes or even neutron stars around after many a hot, fast burning star collapsed.

I didn’t see anything referencing this article at the link?

It looks more like an advertisement for an Internet book store. Isn’t posting advertisements on FR frowned upon?
