GIMP 2.7.3 adds Single Window Mode
Linux Journal ^ | August 30th | Michael Reed

Posted on 09/02/2011 11:11:41 PM PDT by Halfmanhalfamazing

GIMP 2.7.3 has added one of the most requested features in the program’s history: a single window mode. Version 2.7 is part of the development branch, so unfortunately, the feature won't hit most distro repositories for a while.

As I said, because 2.7 is a development branch, most distributions won’t add it to their repositories, and this means that you’ll have to build it yourself. It’s a shame, in a way, because the new window mode might be viewed as a ease of use feature that less advanced users would appreciate. According to this(link) page, it looks like version 2.8 should arrive in about November.

I love Gimp, and it sure does stuff even more effective than Photoshop. Anime and otaku’ fanboys use Gimp to make their banners rather than Photoshop.

Much as I like GIMP, Paint Shop Pro was a lot easier to use.

YAY! I love Gimp, and use it almost every day. But it is one of the most arcane and eclectic programs I have ever used - I have used it for years and am still caught unaware of amazing features! “Single Window Mode” is something I will be very happy to see, and I take it as a small step toward conformity and ease of use.

Personally, I prefer the multiple windows as I can relocate/resize them to wherever convenient.

On my dual-headed laptop, I use the big screen for the image, and drag the other boxes to the other screen. I love the multiple windows as well.

Being an infrequent user of graphics packages, I look for the simple approach. I come to use both. Gimp works well in some ways, PSP in others. I pick the package based on what I want to do.

Cool! I had an old free/hacked version of Photoshop, but I’ve abandoned it for GIMP. This is more like the old Photoshop I’ve grown accustomed to.

I might have to open it up to see what all of the fuss is about :p

I still haven’t figured out how to use it lol. It would be helpful to me but haven’t had time to learn it.

I use PaintShop Pro (v4.14 from 1996 or so) a few times a week for intermediate stuff, only drawback being I have to crank up my VMware XP VM to do it. On the Mac, "Preview" does most of what I need for simple color balancing, resizing, cropping, and I use it even more often than PSP. I use GIMP perhaps every two months for fancy stuff.

Like you said, it depends mostly on what you need to do.

I would enjoy the single-window mode, I must admit. In the multi-window presentation, it seems the window I want is always buried.

Thank God! This was promised for release before the end of last year. The annoying two-window mode (and the interminable loading time) are why I don’t use Gimp more than I do.

Well, it says single window "mode" so it sounds like you'll still have the option. Plus, many commercial programs let you move menus around within their main window and float them or dock them on whichever edge you prefer, so single window doesn't necessarily mean "unconfigurable for shape".

I’m PC based and use PSP Pro3. I work with photos mostly, from two service organizations I belong to, making them web compatible and for newsletters. I’ve delved in to a little more complicated stuff such as croping portions of photos to paste elsewhere, and some recent animated gif work. For the croping, I find Gimp somewhat easier to work with (the process seems more direct), then I have PSP’s animation workshop for the gif work.

Again, both are great packages, and it’s nice to have the option on one or the other.

That's how I do it on my dual monitor desktop.

Question: I can't seem to create flames and abstract smoke whisps as well in Gimp as I see done in PS such as shown here: http://www.photoshoplady.com/30-best-photoshop-abstract-effect-tutorials/.

Am I doing something wrong in Gimp?

You should find that you quickly grow accustomed to the Gimp user interface. I find considerable similarity to Photoshop
