I first saw “Jesus Christ Superstar” on Broadway, my gosh it must have been close to 40 years ago, it doesn’t seem possible. Anyway, I thought then that it was remarkable that people who did not have religious beliefs could write and perform such a remarkable play. The words and actions were, mostly, spot on as how the Gospel could be explained in modern language. Much of the text was actually right from scriptures.

After I saw the movie I couldn’t get it out of my mind and had many of my friends go see it. My little sister cried at the end, she said she didn’t expect them to kill him. I said, “how else did you expect the story of Christ to end?”

Anyway, your post brought back a bunch of really good memories.

Hubby and I saw the movie, and didn’t like it at all. Teddy Neely’s voice was just too WIMPY for the portrayal of Jesus. I like the original cast recording the best.

I saw JCSS in San Francisco around 1971-72.We had orchestra seats. We were the guests of one of my husband’s vendors. The couple who were our hosts were originally from some place in the South, and they were giggling that their parents would be appalled that they were going to see such a scandalous production!

Because we were so close to the front, I mainly remember how LOUD the music was. There were 2-3 rock bands in this production — one in the pit, another on stage, and perhaps another some place else on stage. Not sure about the third. Because our seats were so close, I sat through the entire play with my fingers in my ears because the sound was so painful. My ears hurt until the next day from my fingernails pressing into my ear canals trying to reduce the noise.

Loved the music, however. I just prefer it at a reduced decibal rate!
