" ... A nationwide Zagat survey of diners says 60 percent of foodies favor putting time limits on people eating at restaurants during peak hours. "

No kidding. Whenever I dine in Manhattan, usually visiting my brother, we spend about 3 hours and go through a few bottles of wine etc.

Savages that are incapable of even enjoying food anymore. Just give them a TV where they can watch Jon Stewart and a slice of soggy pizza (organic of course).
Well, nobody surveyed me. I got over that problem by just eating smaller people ...
ta-ta-boom ... thank you ... I'll be here all week. Try the veal and don't forget to tip the waitress ...
No wonder we in this country are so fat.
I wish they would move along and leave so I can sit down, one person said.
If you've waited over two hours for a table at a restaurant, you are a fool. Otherwise, how long do you know they've been there? How about making a reservation if your time is so precious? There's one restaurant we go to that does a good business. On Friday's we've called ahead to see what the wait is and gotten our names on the list before leaving home. If I'm told more than 20 minutes and I'm that hungry, I move on.
Food is culture, food is a basic an enjoyable function in life.
Some people are more like farm animals than human.
This is one of the things the Euros do right.....their meals are meant to be social gatherings that take several hours.
...above is where the people who made the survey used to work.
The quoted line seems to suggest the population surveyed were all “foodies”. I think not. A real “foodie” wants to be able to savor a good meal, and wouldn’t be perturbed by other diners doing the same, as he would have called ahead for reservations.
Perhaps the population surveyed were not foodies, but idiots: If the restaurant in question has food good enough to wait two hours for, you call ahead for a reservation. If it doesn’t, go somewhere else when they tell you it’s a two hour wait.
Just another of the many reasons this country is so darn fat. Slow down ... eat properly ... you might save yourself a few pounds.
We have good food in this country (the culinary arts: quality of foods, preparation, presentation etc), but the food culture is one of: rush in, stuff your face, and get the hell out. Families spend no time together eating. There's practically no conversation and how can you enjoy something or even taste it when you gulp everything down. Everything is LOUD even in more expensive places. I actually saw a young man in a rush stuff the food in his mouth and then putting both his hands on the sides of his head (fingers to the rear) thrusting/packing the food into his mouth with his thumbs while still chewing...
It's horrible!
I truly believe that much of the obesity, gerd (acid reflux), even some family communications would greatly improve if people used this time to communicate as well as eat properly. It seems no one has time, but in reality their time is consumed doing crap and running from one meaningless event to the next.
Most self-reported foodies in PrincessB world are anything but. I hang with foodies about once a month and none would describe themselves this way. One has a husband who travels internationally for work and she goes with him about once a month. Through his colleagues she finds out about restaurants, dishes etc. worth trying and her entire trips revolve around these experiences. She cringes as the word foodie.
When we meet lunch is 2 1/2 hours.
The most vocal “foodie” in PricessB world is an ardent admirer of Rachel Ray and had never heard of Jacques Pepin until I said he was my favorite cookbook author.
Exactly. If you want to go to a popular place, make a reservation. Otherwise, if you see a line, leave and go somewhere else. That makes perfect sense. This idea that you can walk in anywhere and be entitled to be seated quickly, and that the answer is to have some rule that rushes others out, is nanny-ism at its worst.
How often is it that the so called 'popular place' has better food on offer, or is it 'the place to be seen'? With all the available places to eat, why go to the popular place and wait for a long time. 'Waiting for a table' is also a trick used by restaurants in order to get extremely profitable business in their bars. People should get a grip, and quit whining when other diners wish to be civilized and linger over good food, wine and company!
Agreed. I enjoy the whole experience whether dining at home or out. (the mrs. would say I enjoy it a bit too much)
any restaurant that puts dinner on a clock will lose customers.
I detest restaurants that rush you out.
Ha! Sports bars and grills are too expensive to suit him. It’s gotta be REAL CHEAP to meet his approval. Such as Wendy’s (which I like, too) or Subway (ditto).
