Thirsty boy stuck in chimney trying to get drink

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — An 8-year-old boy desperate for a drink tried to get into a neighbor's home by sliding down the chimney, but got stuck for more than four hours, authorities said.

West Valley City police Sgt. Robert Hamilton said the thirsty boy climbed a tree to get onto the home's roof, then slid down the chimney feet first on Friday. The boy made it 30 feet down the chimney before he became wedged between the basement and main floor.

Because of the narrowness of the chimney, as well as its twists and turns, rescuers could not pull out the child with a rope, Hamilton said. They cut an 8-by-5-foot hole in a wall to free the boy, who escaped with little more than scrapes and bruises.

The boy "was surprisingly very calm on scene. His only worry was he was still thirsty when we got there," Hamilton said. The boy was able to move his arms, so rescuers dropped water to him.

Huh?? I got pretty thirsty as a boy and wasn’t the smartest kid in the world but I would never have thought a good way to get a drink would be to climb down a chimney. Don’t they have drinking fountains or hoses in Utah?

Right... He was obviously going to get a glass out of the cupboard, pour himself a nice drink of water, rinse the glass neatly and then climb back up the chimney.

I’m not going to snark at him for trying to climb down a chimney — I pulled some crazy stunts when I was that age. But he needs to work on his excuses a bit.

This is right up there with “the dog ate my homework”.

Perhaps he doesn’t know that you can actually drink tap water. Maybe he was looking for some bottled water.

Once there was a Siamese Cat
Whose coat was black as soot.

And everywhere that kitty went
His sooty foot he put!

Around that neighborhood, he's known as Dennis the Menace.

At some point, they will refer to him as Tater Salad.

As a kid, any hose was fair game as we were out all day playing, riding bikes etc. and figured a little kid didn’t need to ask either.

In college was on a school surveying class where we had to measure stuff in a suburb - and at least had grown up enough to ask permission first. After we had our drink, one lady came out with lemonaide and cookies for our 4-person group of students set up in the street in front of her house and we sad under her shade tree enjoying the break.

Another day some lady yelled at me for asking to use her hose! She later came out to ask what I was doing surveying out in the street. I said “Oh - you didn’t get the notice? The new I-75 bypass is coming through here.” She started getting all mad and I told her “Well, I’m sorry, but we’re just the surveyors, I don’t know anything else. Perhaps try calling the DOT.” (Well - perhaps as a college kid I wasn’t QUITE all grown up yet!)

Kid was lucky.

There have been burglars who were stuck in chimneys for decades before being found.

that’s what I do when I’m thirsty. Screw the garden hose.

You don't even want to know what I do when I'm thirsty....

Has to be. . .or. . .he forgot that Santa gets food and drink - after 'chimney entry' - because he brings toys.

WVC is a hotbed of gangs and crime, glad I left 15 years ago. Probably the kid was breaking into the house as a gang initiation and was going to rob the house. But as an 8 year oldN figured he would lie about being thirsty and all the idiot adults would believe him.

Thanks for fill. . .so not Santa MO after all /lol and a bit of sarc to go with it.

More than a few death reports from those seeking alternate entry - by chimney. They think it is just a simple "downer; but more here, than meets the eye. What you don,'t see inside these chimney's ...can kill you; beyond underestimating ones butt/shoulder/waistline - and greed- that is.

A rediculous story that gives me claustrophobic nightmares. I would literally die from panicking.

What if the house had been empty or the residents away for days? That child could have died.
That said, I agree with those who feel there is more to this story than has been reproted. Either the child is mentally challenged, or morally so.
