Jerry Lewis said Saturday that his years of service to the Muscular Dystrophy Association helped make him a star, but he didn’t provide details on his recent departure as the group’s national chairman.

In his first public appearance since the that announcement, Lewis accepted a lifetime achievement award from the Nevada Broadcasters Association, saying that he made his reputation in show business by saving lives.

"I made my reputation in this business caring for what I did, caring for the people that I did it for," said Lewis, who donned a red foam clown nose at one point during his speech in front of politicians and other entertainers.

"Let me tell you that saving lives is a very, very special project in the life of any man who wants to do that, but I have had the joy of ... extending my life by what I feel in my heart," he said.

Mr. Lewis has had such health problems for the last 10 years it is amazing (and gratifying) he has made it to 85.

The whole world wants to know what happened — some of the most emotional moments in all of TV happened on the MDS telethons.

I am sure Mr. Lewis will continue to use his clout and wealth to support MDS.

But it is impossible to know how badly this will affect the annual fund raiser.

I think a 6 hour mini fund raiser will be lucky to bring in 10% of the usual annual amount.

Strange and sad.

Despite advanced years and bouts of ill health, Jerry looks pretty darn good to me.

Long life, Jerry, and thanks for the memories and all the laffs.

Mr. Lewis looks rather good in that picture. I saw him on TV a few years ago and he looked like he was on death’s door. So I hope he is doing better now.

He was on prescribed steroids and they bloated him up like hell. He seems better now and I join all of us in wishing him long life and comfort.

I wonder if MDA is prepared for the loss of revenue that is about to happen.

The Corporations and organizations that came and gave, did so because it was great publicity and something that was very American to do, but it was Jerry that we all did it for, no disrespect to MDA....Jerry made the experience personal, and we all came every year to see America be with it’s better Angels...

The MDA has not only mishandled this, it is about to take a financial hit, of immeasurable consequence, and drop out of the hearts and prayers of the country, who used to come together once a year to help those affected with MD.....

We live in an age of fundamental transformation........now something else will have to be restored......the years of Obama will go down in history as a low point in America, as he has poisoned so much.

I grew up loving Jerry Lewis as a kid. I could never understand why he became the butt of jokes later in his career. He is one of the greats and always will be.
