Posted on 08/15/2011 10:29:31 AM PDT by jimjohn

Just learned I need to move to Connecticut - Fairfield County area (like within 30 days) . I have questions that are not for Realtors, but for Freepers. You know the ones.

CCW is not prohibitively bureaucratic but sufficiently so to discourage the casually interested. Shotgun laws are minimal. AR type weapons are highly and weirdly regulated so if you have one make sure it conforms to Ct laws.

OTOH in my neck of the woods, Northeast Ct, you can fire your weapons on your property so long as the nearest neighbor is more than 100 yards away.

There are no real red areas in CT, we are a minority everywhere though my neck of the woods had a RINO as a Congressman for a couple of terms. But where I live even most democrats have some sort of gun in the house for defense and critters.

Fairfield is a different world though from my part of CT. Never lived there but it is an expensive county.

One more thing bring gas and heating oil with you, Ct has the highest petro taxes in America.

I also live in Waterbury.
Very “Blue-collar Conservative” is how I would describe lots of it, if talking about the working class. But more and more the place is being overrun by the welfare-class.

I grew up in CT and just recently moved out. It’s full of weekenders from NYC buying up the houses and land and generally being as annoying as liberals from the city can be. Agree that Stew Leonard’s is terrific. Litchfield County is wonderful but is in the process of being spoiled irretrivably—by the weekenders. It used to be full of decent Connecticut Yankees, now it’s full of democrats. Those bad points aside, there isn’t a day that goes by I don’t wish I was “home”. I would kill for a 121 from Main Moon or a slice of John’s Best.

You poor person. Your boss must hate you to transfer you to the most expensive, bluest, and least free state in the nation.

You live on the wrong side of CT. The quiet corner is the “sheetz” as the kids would say. n/s

jimjohn, welcome to the belly of the beast in the blue northeast.
Very high cost of living.
CCW not hard to get.
Very homeschool friendly (well, the CT state constitution is, the Libtards aren't).
NYC is just a short train ride away (but not too close).
We have some nice beaches, decent ski areas, and Vermont/NH is less than a couple hours away.
New haven is a cool town (but beware, they are illegal-friendly).
If you hunt and fish, there is lots of that here.
Mystic Seaport is a great day-trip.
Bridgeport has the only zoo in the state.
Did I miss anything?

The cities are all mini-ghettoes or have mini-ghetto areas... Especially Bridgeport (Tha armpit of New England) as well as parts of Norwalk, Stratford and Stamford.

Depending upon where in Spouthern CT you will be, there are some towns which might make sense... Usually if schools are not a concern.

Fairfield County Towns that are liveable include:
Greenwich
Redding
Fairfield
Parts of Stamford and Norwalk
Monroe
Newtown
Easton
Weston
Westport
Trumbull
Milford (actually NH County)
Shelton & Long Hill

Stay away from:
Bridgeport
Parts of Stratford
Parts of Norwalk

Welcome. Other Freepers are right, though Republicans are relatively plentiful in Fairfield, they are the ultimate country club, RINO squishes. (Altogether CT just scored the highest approval ratings for Obama of any state in the country.) Still that’s better than the rabid Dems you’ll encounter when you are in “The City”.

As to towns, Greenwich is much stronger on the GOP side than say Westport which has traditionally been more Democrat.

Shall we tell him about the cougars we DON'T have in Fairfield county?

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. DEEP says we don't don't. Not to worry.... since you can't carry in state parks & forests....help is only a 911 call away.

I don't think CT has any reciprocal CCW advantages. You'll be starting from scratch. Every town seems to have their own way of *awarding* you your God-given Rights. The town you're moving to, should have it on their town website under the police department. Good luck.

Ironic that Connecticut's nickname is the *Constitution state.* "Qui Transtulit Sustinet." If that doesn't tell you something, be prepared to find the COL high, very high. Laws and permits required for everything.

Connecticut Income Tax Comparison
A Minimum Wage worker earning $15,000/year pays $750.00
A worker earning the median salary of $45,000 pays $2,250.00

Welcome. An upper class worker earning $100,000/year pays $5,000.00

I do. Though I must admit, their "downtown" areas are fun for spotting every variety of snoot, snob, nouveau-riche, liberal, RINO, stereotypical CT finishing school moron you could ever imagine. (though you do see some rather nice cars there too.)

I do love the Darien train station though and it's my "go-to" when I have to go into the city for work.

Gee, I wonder if the OP is moving into Glen Beck's house now that he's leaving New Canaan? that's the funny thing about Fairfield County -as blue as CT is, a great number of conservative TV/radio personalities live there. Hell, Ann Coulter grew up here.

Yep, she’s a CT country club Republican—which is I’m sure why she’s so excited about Christie. This is Romney country for sure, and my guess is she’ll end up pulling the lever for him, wherever she’s voting now.

as others have pointed out, unless you're moving from a very few select places (Provence, Monaco, Oslo, Upper east side, Westchester County, Malibu, Beverly Hills, Amalfi Coast, um, Redmond WA), please prepare for your head to explode.

It's not just that the housing prices are insane, but everything else is too. Highest gas prices in the lower 48! Taxes on everything you can possibly think of that can be taxed - and then also on everything you didn't think of too.

But CT being CT, know that our counties designation doesn't really mean shit. BRIDGEPORT is in Fairfield county. A city that went bankrupt a few years ago, that has one of the lower literacy rates in the country and eternally corrupt politicians. Despite that, Fairfield County remains one of the "richest few counties in teh country." Take out Bridgeport and it wold be the richest year after year forever. it takes some getting used to - even if you are rich yourself. Because rich here is a different kind of rich.

But with that, depending on where you live, you'll find some incredible restaurants and if you have kids, the public schools in some towns are better than private schools in others. (Greenwich, Darien, New Canaan.)

Here's the thing about CT that will never change and will either benefit you greatly or drive you nuts. Each of out 169 towns is its own little fiefdom. So the super rich towns keep their tax base to themselves. Your roads will be plowed before the snow hits the ground. (seriously, they do that here with some blue chemical treatment.) You will pay through the nose, but your town services will be some of the best in the world. Yes, I do believe that. However, if you end up in one of the bigger cities, it's like a different country. The stark contrasts here are sort of creepy at times, esp up around Hartford and Waterbury.

CCW laws are actually not bad, beleive it or not.

Stew’s

Hosmer Mountain Soda

Autumn

(Just kidding about the multiple posts. It seems the system burps from time to time.)

Boy, you are so right with your description. My sister married into a family that used to own a 36 room mansion on the shore down there. Richer than God.

The parents were nice, self made. He was a pilot in WWII. I enjoyed talking to him about England and his time in the war.

His kids: Alcoholic idiots with expensive schooling and nothing to show for it. And my sister married the worst of the bunch.

Funny thing is that the parents recognized it. They left ALL of their money to charity. I laughed out loud when I heard that story. The looks on the faces of the kids was priceless.
