Wouldn't surprise me a bit.

In the meantime, anybody who calls Palin the most polarizing figure of recent memory, can't have any claim to be a right winger OR to follow US politics with any degree of accuracy.

Bush is still more polarizing...because he has *been* President.

Once Palin gets elected, she'll pass him though.

Cheers!

But onyx, Palin isn’t a candidate. She is maneuvering for a VP spot, keeping a high profile.

I’d love to see a stop to the flame wars, but only if it is applied to all the candidate supporters. I think we could discuss the issues without attacking each other personally.

However, when it comes to the candidates themselves, we should be able to post things about the candidates without being considered flame-war-baiters. Assuming the poster doesn’t start the flame-war in their comment section, it’s not really the fault of the poster if a candidate’s supporters get upset at some article and start flaming.

God, did I just defend flame-baiting? It’s too late in the evening for me. I really hate the flame wars. And I hate that supporters of two candidates I like, and a 3rd that i think I like, are always trashing each other’s candidates and also personally attacking each other and trying to get each other banned and dancing on the ashes of long-time zotted freepers who step over the line.

That may well be her position now (who knows), but considering that we’re talking October, 2008, she didn’t have much of a choice then, considering who was at the top of the ticket.

Hate to break it to you Bob, but not only has she not explained that Univision interview, but she said more of the same on O'Relly in 2010:

if you are here illegally, and if you don't follow the steps that at some point through immigration reform we're going to be able to provide, and that is to somehow allow to you work.

Sounds like amnesty to me.

Remember how the last Texan who became President wowed the conservatives with "compassionate conservatism" and the spent so much it left the GOP with no credibility to attack Obama and the Dems?

And the Texan before that was...LBJ. Who Kennedy's own widow accused of being complicit in JFK's death, and who started the Great Society programs?

We've had too many Texans in the White House. Let's give the North a chance!

Cheers!

I'm not interested in your games or your wine consumption. Reread Post 177.

I won't respond to you again.

To be fair, Palin gets attacked all the time in the media anyway, so there’s good reason for people to be protective of her here.

Don't give yourself a name like "rightwinger" and then prove to be ignorant of the basics of US politics.

Cheers!

I believe post 53 was a sarcastic attack on people here who were claiming that Sarah Palin lied about her position on illegal immigrants during the election because she was the VP candidate and had to say what she was told even if she didn’t believe it.

I don’t believe Sarah Palin lied about her position on immigration just to win an election. So in my opinion, those who claim she did are the ones who are attacking her, because they refuse to take her at her word and are making up excuses for her that lessen her.

But some think it would be worse to say Palin believed those things, than to say she lied about them. So they say she lied, and that people who claim she was telling the truth are actually attacking Palin for having those opinions.

Yes, that's true. Look at the Nov. 2010 elections: without them we'd not even have *slowed* the rate of deficit spending by a token amount.

Keep it up, you're learning.

Cheers!

Up until his mismanagement of Iraq war, President Bush was quite a popular president. He unified the country quite well after 9-11, and was the first president in recent memory to gain seats in a mid-term Congressional election. The 2004 election was polarizing not for any other reason than the height of Iraq disaster and Fallujah nightmare. Subseuquent to that election, Iraq dominated the rest of his term.

I am proud that he stuck up for his Iraq decision and righted that ship with surge even while his polls were sinking and support for continuing that war was cratering. He was the true leader in that moment of need.

Sure, that caused other political issues for GOP brand. But, at least he did not abandon Iraq like our current President is abandoning Afghanistan.

Thank god!

You didn’t read *Going Rogue*?

She plainly said she would NEVER take the VP slot again:

(Paraphrasing) The second sled dog’s view, never changes.”

She is running, I wish I could tell how I know.

What do frivolous lawsuits have to do with Palin accepting the VP nomination when she never suggested she would do so when she ran for Governor?

It was an innocent enough post. Most of the readers of this thread are completely unaware of the murders committed on other threads today against Perry. This was an innocent enough post. Most of us adore Palin (who is not running). It was meant to show that NO CANDIDATE is perfect. But tempers are apparently quite raw.

It's going to be an interesting election for 2012.

However, when it comes to the candidates themselves, we should be able to post things about the candidates without being considered flame-war-baiters.

Depends on the timeliness, accuracy, relevance, and completeness of what is posted.

Articles from 2008 which do not reflect more recent public interviews of a candidate are unlikely to have been posted in good faith, when posted by partisan advocates of another candidate.

Cheers!

I prefer the quotes from her interviews with Greta and O'Reilly in 2010 to this older interview.

PALIN ON IMMIGRATION IN HER OWN WORDS - 2010

PALIN (to Greta): People mock the idea of a fence. What's wrong with building a fence? Yes, let's physically secure the border. Let's ramp up border control. Let's provide the tools for those who are putting their lives on the line in order to stop illegal immigration of these aliens. Those are a couple of things.

And then you don't start talking about amnesty, either, kind of as this last-minute, Oh, anybody who's here in the country right now, we're going to provide you amnesty, and even though you've broken the law and we are a nation of laws, you've broken that, we'll still give you -- because then there's going to be a huge influx of those wanting kind of at the last minute to come over the border because they know that they will forever then receive that amnesty.

So you don't start talking about that, but the very first thing you do is physically, literally secure those borders. It baffles me and most Americans why for all these years presidents, administrations have spoken about it but never done it.
O'REILLY: All right, but I'm talking Texas, California, New Mexico, all of them. So you'd send maybe 10,000, 15,000 National Guard down there to assist the Border Patrol, yes?

PALIN: Whatever it takes. Whatever it takes.

O'REILLY: All right, so you'd militarize the border. You'd finish the fence, finish building the fence from Brownsville to San Diego, yes?

PALIN: Yes.

O'REILLY: Ok, the people watching this program have it. We have it. We assume that you, as president, would secure the border. I have confidence that you would do that. But now you have to look inward, all right? And you've got 12 million people staring at you. What are you going to have them do?

PALIN: You're not going to give them a free pass. You're not going to say, OK, you and anybody else who wants to scurry across this porous border between now and when we finally do finally get it fenced in and physically secure, we're going to give you a free pass.

O'REILLY: All right.

PALIN: And just because you've broken law in the past…

O'REILLY: So no amnesty.

PALIN: …we can trust you. No, no amnesty.

O'REILLY: But what do you do with these folks?

PALIN: Which means…

O'REILLY: Do you make them register with the federal government? Do you tell them they have 60 days to get out of here before we put you in jail? What do you do with them?

PALIN: Do we make them register with the federal government? Yes, we do. We're not going to give them a free pass.

O'REILLY: So you make them register with the federal government.

PALIN: We're not going to reward the bad behavior.

O'REILLY: And if they don't register with the -- say you gave them 60 days to register with the federal government. There's a form at the post office they have to send in like a Census form. All right, say they didn't do it.

PALIN: You deport them.
