Rick Perry is rapidly becoming known as a politician who talks a good game, but whose actions belie his words. Last year, he waved the bloody shirt of secession, which horrified the New York Times...until they dug deeper and found that Perry wasn't just talking about seceding. He was aiming to hook up with Mexico in order to fulfill his "shared with [Mexican President] Vincente Fox for open borders." Seriously, though, Perry is becoming a caricature of himself. He first waved the tenth Amendment on gay marriage and abortion, first supporting the interpretations that states should be responsible for defining marriage and related issues, and in a flip-flop worthy of Mitt Romney, came out in favor of a federal constitutional amendment to ban both.
Perry's open borders positions tell us that he is not a conservative. His political pan-gyrations on gay marriage, abortion, and the Tenth Amendment suggest he is not reliable there either, but would trim his sails at the slightest pressure.
Well, he must be good on something. How would he handle judicial appointments, for example. Bear in mind that in Texas, in contrast to states such as Alaska (where a Commission presents the Governor with three choices from which he or she MUST select a Judge), the Texas Governor has pretty much unfettered control of the appointments process to fill judicial vacancies. In a conservative state like Texas, it would be easy to remake the courts in a conservative mold. In fact, it would almost follow de facto, since the appointed justices must face election state wide. No doubt Perry will try to take credit for the relatively conservative state of the Texas judiciary as he has done with the Texas economy when the relative health of both has been more in spite of, than because of, Rick Perry.
I have not done an exhaustive study of Perry's judicial appointments, although undoubtedly conservatives in Texas would have done so. I found one particular judicial appointment, the subsequent election, and Perry's reaction to it to be most instructive about his orientation toward strong judicial conservatives.
In 2001, one of Perry's first selections to succeed the staunchly conservative Greg Abbot (who had been elected Attorney General) was Xavier Rodriguez, a self-described moderate. In trying to move the Texas Supreme Court to the left, he drew the ire of conservatives in Texas. An up and coming young conservative, Steven Wayne Smith stepped forward to challenge Rodriguez. Smith, who was superbly qualified, had argued and won the landmark 1996 case of Hopwood v. Texas which successfully challenged affirmative action at the University of Texas Law School. In effect, he was a hero to conservatives in Texas and an anathema to the Establishment. The Establishment, including Perry and John Cornyn, no doubt detested Smith for dismantling affirmative action at the UT Law School. But when Smith stepped forward to challenge a self proclaimed moderate appointment of Perry, who happened to be Hispanic, that was the last straw. Perry and his cronies in the Establishment did all they could to stop Smith but he prevailed over Rodriguez easily and was in stalled as a justice of the Texas Supreme Court.
In 2004, Perry encouraged a challenger to run against Smith. The Establishment lined up with Cornyn and Perry on one side and the Texas Eagle Forum,Kent Hance and Ward Connerly on the other. This time the Establishment prevailed and Smith was defeated. He attempted a comeback in 2006, but Perry recruited another challenger, less conservative than Smith, and he lost by less than 1%.
Perry's actions, and his vindictive crusade against an up and coming conservative legal superstar, suggest that a Perry Presidency would be more likely to yield David Souters and Harriet Miers than Antonin Scalias and Clarence Thomases. When it comes to Rick Perry, the message to the Federalist Society and constitutional conservatives is caveat emptor.
No, he just put Islam up on a Texas pedestal and called out the A&M ROTC saber company to salute a Muslim leader.

I will find you the thread that started me looking. I frankly don’t know what *they* believe in Pennsylvania or anywhere else. I DO know what I found on my own, through my own research, because someone on that thread asked a simple question. That question made me curious. So I rode my wittle mousey straight to the nearest couple of search engines and looked for myself. I suggest before you defend what you don’t know, you should do the same.
I am not part of a collective and it is insulting that you would suggest such a thing.
I have my grips about some of Perry's policies and have been active in changing his mind over the years. What I've found is that he does listen when the citizens call him out... Unique among today's politicians from ANY state.
With all the bad qualities expressed here, he does have quite a few good ones. One is the stiff determination to win and that's what we need right now.
That being said, I suspect he'll become the main target for Obama and all other America hating groups very quickly.
Perry’s been through three elections and nearly 12 years as Governor. He’s been my Governor for a third of my life, so I don’t need to do any “research”. If you want to start surfing the web for rumors and innuendo to believe in, go right ahead.

As a former Democrat, Perry can speak to that swath of his former party that has become disenchanted with their party as President Obama has taken it even farther to the left, in a way that few Republicans can. He can also speak well and credibly to all wings of the national GOP, from the fiscal cons to the social cons to the libertarian set.
He would appeal to all segments of the Republican electorate and would come armed with a record of economic success and a commitment to liberty that no other contender can match.
Texas has been voted #1 business climate for the last seven years.
Texas has been getting all of California’s jobs.
Perry must be doing something right.

This Perry trashing comes from the Ron ‘truther’ Paul nuts, Debra Medina sour grapers, lurking Libs- and I suspect, over zealous Sarah Palin supporters and a few Bachmann supporters.

I am truly glad you have enough faith in him to prepare the very lengthy serving of spam for all to enjoy, but it doesn’t change the simple facts.
Perry has vigorously supported open borders. At least one of his court appointments was not a conservative and when the people rejected that appointment, Perry went on a jihad to defeat the conservative who replaced him.
He supported the odious Al Gore in 1988 before he conveniently switched to the GOP, no doubt because his electoral prospects in Texas were better there.
He now claims to be a very committed social conservative, so committed that he has flip flopped on his earlier 10th Amendment based opposition to Constitutional Amendments to ban abortion and same sex marriage. Yet, as recently as 2008, he was completely comfortable supporting Rudy Giuliani, the ONLY proabortion, pro-same sex marriage candidate in the GOP field, when there were prolife options available, such as Thompson and Huckabee and even McCain.
Perry can’t claim credit for Texas’ robust economy any more than Obama can claim credit that the United States is the largest economy in the world. Texas was thriving when Perry showed up. It will thrive after he leaves. As an institutionally weak executive, he is at best irrelevant.

Those are dead issues not because Rick Perry killed them. He pushed them along with liberal justices early on and it was the very conservative legislature and the very conservative electorate who killed them. Perry will have not such constraints on his behavior in Washington. He will be George Bush on steroids. His record is going to be examined and it is not an attack or smear to do so. Why don’t you and your cohorts state by explaining why he appointed the liberal justice and then went hell bent for leather to defeat the conservative?
