Vanity ^ | 11 August 2011 | Windflier

Posted on 08/11/2011 9:47:12 AM PDT by Windflier

WARNING to everyone: PHONE NUMBERS OF ALL are now on Facebook - including cell phone numbers!

No joke - go to the top right of the screen, click on Account, then click on Edit Friends, go left on the screen and click on Contacts.

All phone numbers are published. Please report this on your Status, so your friends can remove their numbers and thus prevent abuse.

You put that info in your profile, then set it up to only share with 'friends'

Then only your friends can see your number. What exactly is the problem?

...These are NOT visible to your other friends ... just you...

And Facebook. How long till FB sells this info to telemarketers? No doubt this is buried deep within their Terms of Service you agreed to.

It is only the numbers of the people you have imported from your phone.

No, it is only the numbers of people who have used their mobile device to access FB or have listed their number on their profile.

I have no means of importing any numbers from my phone the only numbers I found on the list that are on my phone are those of 2 friends that are real estate agents and do list their numbers in their profiles. All the other numbers were friends that use their mobile devices to access FB.

I have never imported anyone from my phone, nor do I remember giving my phone number to Facebook.

I checked. Telephone numbers are there for my friends.

I probably should have re-written the post I lifted and pasted in here. It does come off a little alarmist.

That said, my intention was simply to share this info with others, as it relates to privacy concerns vis a vis Facebook and the internet in general.

I was just reading the Facebook statement as to why the phone numbers of only some of my friends were listed.

I too do not have a phone that can import (I wouldn’t know how anyway) maybe they commented on FB from their phone.

Only 24 of my friends have numbers listed. Of those I know some of them do update their FB from their phones.

On another note, I don't think a cell phone just by it's nature is a very secure thing. So if I don't recognize the number calling me. I do the old fashioned thing and don't answer it.

I suspect that the numbers may have been imported into Facebook inadvertently in most cases. The verbiage is as follows:

Facebook Phonebook displays contacts you have imported from your phone, as well as your Facebook friends.
If you would like to remove your mobile contacts from Facebook, you need to disable the feature on your mobile phone and visit this page.

Nonsense...My phone number is not there.

I never even gave Facebook my phone numbers. I don't know anyone else who did either.

If someone you know put your phone number in their cell phone contact list, and then allowed Facebook to sync their cell contact list with Facebook, then your number is on Facebook in their list. That may not be visible to other users, but it is in the Facebook system for the company to use as they please.

“I checked. Not so.”

Yes, I checked this out and I could see alot of my friends mobile numbers. Of course you could also see those on their info page! I have never put a phone number on there BUT my son’s was listed. I sent him a message and told him he should change his settings! I did post that on my status as I am sure most people don’t realize that they really should NOT put their numbers on their page!

I don't use Outlook, and only access the internet via a desktop computer. When I followed the prompts, I saw phone numbers displayed for every 'friend' on my list.

Yes, these people had to have input those numbers into their Facebook profiles for them to show up like that, but I'm just wondering if most people understand that that information is accessible like this.

Perhaps some folks will see this alert and choose to not share their phone numbers this way.

Its worse than that. If it was just the list of FB friends and the numbers they entered into FB, that would be one thing. But this also includes people and numbers from your cell phone, if you use a cell phone app to connect to Facebook. There is an option to sync your cell phone contacts with Facebook, and vice versa, and the default for that option is enabled.

The list on my page had people from my phone who are not on Facebook. And in some cases, it found the phone number and linked it to someone else on Facebook I've never heard of. Some of those numbers may be old and now used by someone else, but I know some are still current. So I guess the unknown people listed the wrong number? I don't know.

They are there, but if you use your phone to access Facebook, I understand you can’t remove your number.

So, my original post wasn’t completely accurate. Check out this article on Mashable for more info: http://mashable.com/2011/08/11/facebook-phone-numbers/

When you signed up on facebook, did you submit your phone number?

Geez I wish people would quit reporting stuff that happened months ago. Seriously FB did this last Jan or Feb so if you entered your cellphone number in when you opened your account it’s been visible that long.
