Vanity ^ | 11 August 2011 | Windflier

Posted on 08/11/2011 9:47:12 AM PDT by Windflier

WARNING to everyone: PHONE NUMBERS OF ALL are now on Facebook - including cell phone numbers!

No joke - go to the top right of the screen, click on Account, then click on Edit Friends, go left on the screen and click on Contacts.

All phone numbers are published. Please report this on your Status, so your friends can remove their numbers and thus prevent abuse.

Remove Imported Contacts Imported contacts are displayed on your Invites and Imported Contacts page and synced mobile contacts are displayed in your Facebook Phonebook. Contacts may be used to improve the quality of friend suggestions for you and your friends. If you remove imported and synced contacts: ■ Friend suggestions for you and your friends may become less relevant. ■ Your phonebook will no longer include synced contacts, but will still display the contact info of friends who have included it on their profiles. Note: Before you click Remove, you need to make sure syncing is switched off. To do this, open the Facebook application on your iPhone, click the Friends icon in the main menu, then click Sync

It just means that most of your FB “friends” have used a mobile device at some point to access FB.

Yet another breach of privacy by Facebook.

Nonsense...My phone number is not there.

I never even gave Facebook my phone numbers. I don't know anyone else who did either.

Everytime of late I have updated my mail server they keep asking do I want to link my contacts to my Facebook account and I say no.
This is where they get all these numbers and information.
The way the smart phones now work, especially if you using Android, is all this info is stored in your Goggle account which is backed up and synced at least once a day.
Disable this function on Facebook and your e-mail account.

Facebook

“Rumors claiming that your phone contacts are visible to everyone on Facebook are false. Our Contacts list, formerly called Phonebook, has existed for a long time. The phone numbers listed there were either added by your friends themselves and made visible to you, or you have previously synced your phone contacts with Facebook. Just like on your phone, only you can see these numbers.”

Anyone who give Facebook (or any other such application) their private information deserves what comes to them.

It’s true. I got word and checked last night. Anyone who uses FB through their cell phone or Smart phone or whatever has involuntarily given the application access to their phone book, and FB has accordingly uploaded that information into its database.

I don’t use FB through my cell phone, but most of my friends do, and lo and behold, their numbers are listed on my contacts page.

Sorry but this post is about 90% lie. Reality is thus:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2390874,00.asp
It turns out that Facebook users who sync their phone contacts with the site see those numbers pop up in their contact lists. In addition, any contact details a Facebook friend (or even a non-friend, but more on that later) has made visible publicly will appear on users’ contact lists. Finally, contact details revealed by Facebook friends to other friends but not to the public also appear.

The phone numbers listed there were either added by your friends themselves and made visible to you, or you have previously synced your phone contacts with Facebook. Just like on your phone, only you can see these numbers.”

I checked my kids. The only one that shows a phone number is my son, and he put it in his profile. My daughters don’t show.

They seem to continually change the rules so you have to constantly “opt out” of their latest and greatest ideas to make your info public even after you said NO.

That's one of my biggest beefs with Facebook. They treat their users like a commodity. I've had to make changes to my account more than a few times to block one of their new 'features'.

It's a real irritation.

Actually according to the EULA people accept (and the EULA of almost every other audience participation website out there) everything you put on their website IS theirs to publish as they wish.

Of course in this case the warning is pure paranoid lies, none of that data is actually published without explicit permission of the user. But hey don’t let the facts get in the way of a tirade.

Why in the world would anyone put phone numbers in their profile, yet expect that information not to be public?

You put that info in your profile, then set it up to only share with 'friends', but then you turn around and see that everyone's phone numbers are aggregated into a 'one click' list.

I'm sure that most folks didn't predict that Facebook would do that. Perhaps it's a fine point, but I see nothing wrong with alerting everyone to the latest and greatest Facebook 'improvement'.

Facebook like FR is a private organization. They can do whatever the he’ll they want.

And we users can inform our friends about all of their sneaky little changes when we run across them.

Yes, I do and, yes, I did. I went to Privacy Preferences, Customize Settings and clicked on Preview My Profile. Only I can see my phone number. (I had previously set it that way.) I agree with other FReepers who say this is a bunch of excitement over nothing ~ if you had already set your phone number as viewable to only yourself. This warning has gone around Facebook numerous times and if you were paying attention, you made a privacy change a long time ago.

What is this mobile phone application you speak of? ;)

I’m about ready to abandon, facebook, google+, email, give up my FR account. I don’t have an Iphone, I might get rid of my pay as you go cell phone, land line, ditch my bank.

Trying to keep up with all this crap is silly.

Nonsense...My phone number is not there. I never even gave Facebook my phone numbers.

You have to have input your phone number into your Facebook profile, or have accessed FB using a handheld device for your number to show up.

I've never done either, but apparently nearly all of my 'friends' have. Just letting everyone know that this is how Facebook operates.

Yes, I found the numbers also. I don’t think these people know this is going on so I told them. If they want the numbers posted so be it, but at least they are informed.

I checked off all the privacy settings that are available on Facebook. Nobody can see anything of mine unless I want them to.

It is only the numbers of the people you have imported from your phone.
