How to Make Homemade Chlorine Bleach

One of the main components that you’ll want to have around the house (or apartment) during a SHTF situation is chlorine bleach. Not only can it be used for cleaning water (although boiling is hands down more effective and healthier) it is excellent for keeping things sanitary.

Unfortunately, the average shelf life of liquid bleach (being stored between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit) is around 6 months. After that, bleach will lose 20% of it’s strength at around the year mark and then 20% each year after that. So if you’re not vigilant about keeping it rotated, chances are when you need it for disinfecting water or to keep things clean you’ll be fresh out of bleach and luck.

Filters have limited using life as well. But if you have an out break of something even just the flu, you are going to need something to clean up with that’s antibacterial and antivirial to stop the spread. Your water filter can do that.

You can use a non-scented, household chlorine bleach that contains a chlorine compound to disinfect water.
Do not use non-chlorine bleach to disinfect water. Typically, household chlorine bleaches will be 5.25% available chlorine. Follow the procedure written on the label. When the necessary procedure is not given, find the percentage of available chlorine on the label and use the information in the following table as a guide. (Remember, 1/8 teaspoon and 8 drops are about the same quantity.)

Available Chlorine Drops per Quart/Gallon of Clear Water Drops per Liter of Clear Water

1% 10 per Quart - 40 per Gallon 10 per Liter
4-6% 2 per Quart - 8 per Gallon (1/8 teaspoon) 2 per Liter
7-10% 1 per Quart - 4 per Gallon 1 per Liter

(If the strength of the bleach is unknown, add ten drops per quart or liter of filtered and settled water. Double the amount of chlorine for cloudy, murky or colored water or water that is extremely cold.)

Mix the treated water thoroughly and allow it to stand, preferably covered, for 30 minutes. The water should have a slight chlorine odor. If not, repeat the dosage and allow the water to stand for an additional 15 minutes. If the treated water has too strong a chlorine taste, allow the water to stand exposed to the air for a few hours or pour it from one clean container to another several times.

You can use granular calcium hypochlorite to disinfect water.
Add and dissolve one heaping teaspoon of high-test granular calcium hypochlorite (approximately ¼ ounce) for each two gallons of water, or 5 milliliters (approximately 7 grams) per 7.5 liters of water. The mixture will produce a stock chlorine solution of approximately 500 milligrams per liter, since the calcium hypochlorite has available chlorine equal to 70 percent of its weight. To disinfect water, add the chlorine solution in the ratio of one part of chlorine solution to each 100 parts of water to be treated. This is roughly equal to adding 1 pint (16 ounces) of stock chlorine to each 12.5 gallons of water or (approximately ½ liter to 50 liters of water) to be disinfected. To remove any objectionable chlorine odor, aerate the disinfected water by pouring it back and forth from one clean container to another.

From the Army manual, to make a concentrated chlorine solution that you can use for disinfecting water (or to be used in maintaining a clean and sanitary living environment), you'll want to use calcium hypochlorite that has around 70% available chlorine.

If you're buying pool shock, on the back of the bag it will tell you what percentage of chlorine is available. The one I use is called "Zappit 73 Pool Shock, it is pure calcium hyphochlorite that contains up to 73% available chlorine and sells for around $ 5 for a 1lb bag.

To make the homemade chlorine bleach solution, you'll need to do the following:

• Mix 2 level Tablespoons of Calcium Hypochlorite to 3 cups of water.

From there, the article says you use the homemade liquid bleach the same way you'd use purchased liquid bleach, 8 drops (or so) to a gallon of water.

I agree with you. I have competed in athletics from age 9 until I graduated college. I have always been around that kind of language but I never liked it. Neither of my parents ever used any kind of profanity, so I guess that was the way I was raised. Now I knew some pretty good people who cussed like a sailor so I just ignored it but like I said, I never liked it and still don’t.

Even in the Artillery I would not let the guys cuss in front of my wife when they visited my home, I read so much here at freerepublic that the cussing here has become the worst exposure to the language that I get in my life, it affects us all and leads everyone to unconsciously adopting the language.

This is a great victory for the left in America, they have pushed this agenda for decades.

Well I come from a long line of very conservative Christians that were also to a man(and women) farmers. They would never say GD, Damn or take the name of the Lord in vain. $hit has always been $hit in religious farm country. I think you characterization of $hit as a cuss word is naive and narrow.

Since SHTF is an acronym and I offered you other choices you apparently have decided you are looking for a fight or have appointed yourself the FR moral police. Kartographer has published many threads using that acronym over a long period of time. If you don't like it pm the mods.

The problem is as your thread suggests, chlorine has a limited shelf life. Other cleaners do not, and if I don’t need chlorine for water, then I don’t need it at all.

Alcohol, ammonia, and a whole bunch of other cleaners including natural that work well. We use Thieves cleaner at our house for many cleaning jobs.
