‘Whale Wars’ Spin-Off Coming To Animal Planet
ecorazzi ^ | July 25, 2011 | Michael dEstries

All signs pointed to this development earlier this summer and now Animal Planet has gone and made it official: “Whale Wars” is getting a spin-off series.

The cable network, obviously eager to expand one of its longest-running hit series, will focus on the Sea Shepherd’s efforts to to stop an annual whale hunt known as “The Grind” in the Faroes Islands. The Lizard Trading Company, which produces the series for Animal Planet, started filming for the tentatively titled “Faroe Island Project” back on July 15th.

As the press release notes, the Sea Shepherd’s Faroes campaign has gotten off to a rocky start with the detainment of their ship, the Steve Irwin, in the nearby Shetland Islands. A Scottish court is holding the ship due to a claim filed by a Maltese company over a 2010 incident -saying the conservation org caused sustained damage when they freed hundreds of bluefin tuna from the company’s nets off the coast of Libya.

Sea Shepherd say they need $1.4 million to release the Irwin or face its permanent seizure.

“For the last four years, WHALE WARS has been riveting television because of the passion of the Sea Shepherds, the risks they take to save the lives of whales, and the magnificent and dangerous beauty of the Southern Ocean,” notes Marjorie Kaplan, president and general manager of Animal Planet Media. “Now they are once again preparing to put their lives on the line, this time in a lush and unfamiliar corner of northern Europe, where the customs are different and the killing of whales continues. And we plan be there to document every moment.”

The network has yet officially announce a release date or number of episodes for the new spin-off.

Thanks. 453 posts; it’ll take some time (later) to digest.

I’m a “bible head” on the eating animals thing.

The LORD made it very clear: you can eat anything that isn’t a people.

If the guidance came from the LORD, it’s good enough for me. :-)

I note that never in the Bible did He bother to instruct that if they taste good and thereby get scarce, stop eating them. Again: good enough for me. I’m kinda simple that way.

I’d like to try some whale meat. Haven’t yet had the opportunity. But when and if I do have a chance, I will take advantage of it, bleeding heart leftist sensibilities be damned.

Maybe the Whale Wars crew will get the crabs?

I shudder to think of the venereal diseases running rampant on those ships. Whoever ends up with the Steve Irwin will need to do some fumigation - I'd start with napalm.

“Rig Wars” is probably in the planning stages.

I’m in segment three. I want the whalers and the SeaHippies to crash into each other and sink to the bottom of the antarctic ocean. The show’s only compelling because it’s so much fun to root against all vessels involved.

The only exception to the rule would be the sailboat from a couple weeks ago that disappeared in the storm and was presumed sunk. Those guys didn’t deserve it.

No doubt that’s probably the biggest risk they actually take ~ getting the crabs again and again and again.

CommodeDoor Watson is and that likely has more to do with the whale worship than anything else.

They pretty much did. That expedition was incompetent and irresponsible to the point it was tantamount to deliberate suicide.

Vessel BERSERK and Vikings lost in Antarctica while violating treaty

A widely criticised odyssey to the South Pole has gone tragically wrong as three ‘Vikings’ are presumed to have lost their lives.

The party of five, made up of four Norwegians and one Briton, were marking the centennial of fellow Norwegian Roald Amundsen becoming the first explorer to reach the South Pole.

In a departure from traditional Viking methods, they commandeered quad bikes in Auckland so skipper Jarle Andhoy and his 18-year-old companion could drive the 1600-kilometre journey. This reportedly overloaded their vessel, Berserk, making it unstable.

After dropping two men on the ice, the three remaining crew members continued to man Berserk. There has been no sign of them since February 22, when they used their emergency beacon during one of the worst storms in 20 years.

A nearby New Zealand Navy vessel began a search and rescue operation, which failed to find them. Sea Shepherd vessel Steve Irwin, who has experience in hunting Norwegians of the whaling kind, helped search in the 8 metre swells and 182 kilometre per hour winds.

It is assumed that Berserk has sunk, as beacon transmissions ended several hours after activation. Andhoy and his young companion aborted their expedition across melting ice and barely managed to catch the last flight out for the summer.

According to Scott Base Manager, Troy Beaumont, the expedition violated every one of the treaties set forth regarding travel to the Antarctic, including not gaining permission from Norwegian or New Zealand authorities.

The ‘Vikings’ had been warned of the imminent bad weather after an encounter with the New Zealand navy at Back Door Bay. Cigars were shared.

Andhoy, a celebrity in Norway, is known for undertaking controversial adventures. While on a voyage following the path of a Viking chief, he was fined for “trying to talk to the polar bears”.

When they start whale farms, I might try whale meat. In the meantime I will stick to Bar-B-que beef and Pork ribs.

I wanted to see them sunk and the survivors machine-gunned in the water. They are terrorists and anyone supporting them supports terrorism.

They’re killing whales under the guise of “research” but I doubt they have an end game in the plan. Research is just a front for commercially harvesting the whale meat. If they clearly stated what research is being done and why it needs to be done and when they’ll complete the task and stop the hunting, then it might be considered legitimate. So far, it just seems like they’re using one ‘reason’ as an excuse to hunt whales for a completely different purpose.

Besides, what knowledge can they gain by killing 500 whales that they couldn’t get from killing 50 and extrapolating the evidence gathered?

I’m not a particularly big fan of the Japanese but I AM a big fan of the rule of law. I’m not a fan of vigilantes.

The US gov’t is not enforcing it’s own immigration laws and I think those laws should be enforced. If I go to the Mexican border and start rounding up illegals, will Animal Planet do a series. It’s pretty much the same thing.

The species of whales they’re mostly taking are not endangered and are very numerous. What they’re doing is no different than commercially hunting deer for the venison. They very occasionally will take one of the whales listed as endangered.
