All signs pointed to this development earlier this summer and now Animal Planet has gone and made it official: Whale Wars is getting a spin-off series.
The cable network, obviously eager to expand one of its longest-running hit series, will focus on the Sea Shepherds efforts to to stop an annual whale hunt known as The Grind in the Faroes Islands. The Lizard Trading Company, which produces the series for Animal Planet, started filming for the tentatively titled Faroe Island Project back on July 15th.
As the press release notes, the Sea Shepherds Faroes campaign has gotten off to a rocky start with the detainment of their ship, the Steve Irwin, in the nearby Shetland Islands. A Scottish court is holding the ship due to a claim filed by a Maltese company over a 2010 incident -saying the conservation org caused sustained damage when they freed hundreds of bluefin tuna from the companys nets off the coast of Libya.
Sea Shepherd say they need $1.4 million to release the Irwin or face its permanent seizure.
For the last four years, WHALE WARS has been riveting television because of the passion of the Sea Shepherds, the risks they take to save the lives of whales, and the magnificent and dangerous beauty of the Southern Ocean, notes Marjorie Kaplan, president and general manager of Animal Planet Media. Now they are once again preparing to put their lives on the line, this time in a lush and unfamiliar corner of northern Europe, where the customs are different and the killing of whales continues. And we plan be there to document every moment.
The network has yet officially announce a release date or number of episodes for the new spin-off.

Aw, what a bitch! You mean to tell me you guys don’t have George Soros in your rolladex? Pity.
Seriously though, as much pleasure as seizing the rustbucket would bring me, I’d prefer to see an explosion break its keel in two pieces while at sea. Survivors to cope with sharks and cold water as best as they can.
But that’s just me.
I'd rather it got turned over to the fishing company as payment for damages and used to fish. Heads would explode from Hollywood to Hobart.
Then, every now and then someone wakes up and realizes the Sea Shepherds are actually the Nazis!
Coming soon Whale Wars meets Deadliest Catch.
Is it just me or do other sane people think these clowns are criminals
>> I’d rather it got turned over to the fishing company as payment for damages and used to fish.
heh... I can’t argue with that concept. Hoisted on their own petard, and all that.
Me, I just like to see stuff explode. Especially leftist stuff.
The Japanese whalers?
Thank heavens a ship was seized. Lawful governments do some times act correctly. I would love to see an harrassed comapany obtain letters of Marque and Reprisal, arm its ships with a 5” gun and cure the hippies.
It happened to have it come one day, and I was painting or something
that I didn't want to interrupt to change the channel.
Piracy and chemical terrorism come to mind.
The Sea Shepards
The Japanese whalers?
This is actually a more heated debate than you might think on Free Republic. A large number of FReepers support the whalers; another large portion the hippies. A vocal third segment would like to see both sunk.
Watching the show I am torn between the two sides, as I feel they are both decidely wrong.
The Japanese, come on "research", no one is buying that BS.
The Sea Shepard? Please. At least Captain Nemo and the Nautalus was fighting for revenge of his families death and thus garneded some sympathy.
But I am reminded of the quote falsely attributed to george Patton, when asked what he would do if caught beteen the Russians and the Germans:
I'd fight in both directions.
>> A large number of FReepers support.. the hippies.
Seriously? On what basis?
A few of those ‘sheep’ were humbled by the Japanese people and their civilized behavior following the earthquake/tsunami back in March. The crew had been assaulting Japanese whalers - private fishermen in a foreign land no less...when the tsunami slammed them with a dose of reality.
I believe it was on the Weather Channel which had 2 remarkable shows on the coastal towns that were devastated.
When I say "the ship", I'm referring to the Nisshin Maru.
I would love to see an episode where the hippies receive all the harassment they like to dish out.
“Coming soon Whale Wars meets Deadliest Catch.”
Maybe the Whale Wars crew will get the crabs?
