BARTLESVILLE, OK - To Protect and Serve... sadly, one of their own failed to be provided with sufficient protection from the elements to survive.
Last Wednesday, a Bartlesville Police Department K9 died.
The dog, a 2 yr-old Belgian Malinois named Copper, had been with the department for just 5 months before his tragic death.
Copper lived with his handler, a Bartlesville Police officer - the man left Copper in his outdoor kennel for "a couple of hours" on Wednesday.
When the handler returned home, the dog was dead on the slab of his kennel...slab?
As in cement? In the heat of the day?

Epic FAILURE as a human! Back to the end of the evolutionary line for you. Start over.
The author’s point is that the dog was left in a kennel with said slab in this intense *heat*
Was there sufficient shade/shelter for this dog to avoid dying of hyperthermia?
Clearly not, or there would be a live dog.
A good handler would keep the dog indoors on such a hot day. That is what dog crates/gates are for—and a police dog is presumably well trained enough not to escape or break out of either enclosure.
A handler who cannot be responsible for an animal assigned to his care has no business keeping the peace in a community.
I hope that story doesn’t come with some irony like he left the police dog in the car while writing a ticket to some lady for leaving a dog (or kid) in the hot car unattended.
Perhaps the recruiting process is geared towards dysfunctional minds.
It seems that many police officers are either former bullies, or those who were bullied and are looking to exact revenge on society.
I’m not sure what kind of physiological screening is done on perspective LEOs, but they might want to tweak it a bit.
I read where Boston doesn’t want cops with too high an IQ because they’ll eventually go find a job elsewhere. From what I’ve heard, cops have an IQ somewhere between 105 and 110.
Shouldn't be a problem in Boston.
It was an interesting article here on FR a while back.
I know that you have an agenda, I know the author appears to have one. I’d like more information. I said I am not defending the officer. I don’t know what the standards are for police K9 enclosures are as far as flooring (do you?).
I would think the dogs would routinely be kept indoors, however I have no idea what the protocol is, and no one has called me for my opinion. Anything I assumed would simply be me guessing and thus a waste of time. We have enough people willing to do that.
If a cop leaves his car parked, forgets to set the parking brake and it rolls into a river, is there negligence involved?
Is the loss covered by insurance?
Are police dogs (worth $15 to $29k) insured? Regularly given health checks?
Do K9 cops get a clear and complete set of instructions on the care and maintenance of the animals in their care? If not, I hear the frantic typing in thousands of police departments across the country doing the obvious.
There is plenty of blame to go around.
If my dog and cats ever die of heat, I will have to be right there next to them, or it won't happen. And they are just crummy rescue critters.
I’ve heard it said that police and criminals have similar psychiatric profiles.
It may be true, in the case of *bad* cops, but I don’t believe it is true of cops who remember and act according to Peelian Principles.
The problem with these threads (as you can see from the post directly before yours) is that there is a set of people who look for these stories because they don’t need facts. They simply need a few set of circumstances and then they know what happened. They don’t need a necropsy, they don’t need an investigation. They simply need a dog, a cop and a death. If those things are involved they know the cop was an idiot, evil and at fault.
I always think one should make their public comments based on all the information they can get, but maybe that’s just me.
As for your questions, I don’t know the answers, and I doubt we will find them here. It may depend on each dept. Even if you don’t like dogs (obviously I do) it seems a huge waste of resources to let a dog die like that. The animal was quite valuable, he should have been kept in a safe place and in the best conditions. I would like to see a photo of where he was.
But, playing Devil’s Advocate (which gets me vilified here) I’ll also be suspicious of the writer, who I know nothing about, just from her tone. I’ve been involved in the Animal Rights anti-breeder fight for long enough, and they are not our friends.
And if my dog ever dies of heat it will be because my AC stopped and will probably both be lying dead together, too. I doubt your pets are crummy. either.
If you’re going to insult me, it’s considered good FR manners to ping me.
After reading your inaccurate post about me it’s hard to imagine you getting your feelings hurt about me not pinging you.
My post was completely accurate, as your own words have proven. You have the same bad manners and arrogant attitude of some of your thug cop buddies. No wonder you’re a cop groupie.
