Try your hand at homemade yogurt. The yogurt cultures turn the lactose into lactic acid so no more tummy issues. With homemade, you can make it to your own liking - tart or sweet, custardy or a drink, or whatever flavor or added goodies. Plain yogurt can be used in cooking as a substitute for cream or sour cream. You can plop 16 oz of plain yogurt into a paper towel lined colindar overnight and have a good substitute for cream cheese that makes a mean cheesecake! Some people like to use the whey that's drained off in cooking or as a drink (to each his own).

So have I. I started it because this weekend I did a tour of several grocery stores in a fifty-mile radius because my closest sources have taken such a sudden change for the worse.

You know, I know some really rich liberals who never set foot inside a grocery store. They have help to do that, and pay no attn to the bill and eat out most of the time anyway. When the grocery stores show up empty, will their maids and cooks even bother to come back to the house?

I noticed that Walmart has gone up on their 50 cent cans to about 79 cents. Buy what you can now because the prices are going up.

Yes, that’s the “noodle”. So simple and quick to make. I use just a spoonful of cream, water or broth just to get it mixed. Your rice dish sounds good. They’re also good in chicken soup or as a wrap.

There’s probably not enough LE to block many roads. They’ll be needed along the main highways and keeping the peace in the cities.

Try alibris.com if you haven’t for older books. Also, check out Gutenberg.org for free downloadable books of ‘older’ technologies.

I used to share office space with the foodstamp office. One day, the secretary went ballistic because she finally got fed up with them. Seems she was taking home less money in her paycheck than what the losers were getting for sitting home doing their nails.

I started keeping bees as a part of our self-sufficient lifestyle plan. Honey is a great sweetener and has value as a cough & cold remedy and wound dressing.

Greatest part is that the bees do the vast majority of the work, leaving me to do other things.

The bees have even provided a certain security role, as some boys that used to trespass on the backside of a hill behind my home are now reluctant to do so because they are unsure whether or not the bees will attack. :)

I would add chocolate to that. Alcohol, chocolate and comfort foods are what people want in bad times. The price of chocolate has really gone up.

I question for you, sir, regarding this part of your post: “lots of solid gold coins to buy stuff with.” Just what are you going to buy with a gold coin that is worth maybe $1,500. A loaf of bread, quart of milk, etc.?

Don’t you think that a piece of silver is more, “negotiable” than a high-priced piece of gold?

Possum, I mainly put that in there because last time I mentioned stocking up with useful things, stuff a fellow might need to make do, some guy came along and told me how gold would get you through rough times better. That gold had seen folks through tough times throughout history.
I figure if it gets bad, real bad, Mad Max kind of bad, that I’d whole lot rather have a pocket full of .22 bullets or some buckshot for a shotgun than I would a whole bunch of krugerrands ... but that’s just me

We are still in the discussion stages on this, but I doubt that we will do it. We keep several jars in stock, including raw honey from the farmers market.

What I haven’t seen here, is WATER! I have three 50 gallon drums stored in my basement, along with a little hand pump that sells for about $3.49 at Harbor Freight. Your local Farmer’s Co-op, Grange or Farm Supply sells clean water-quality barrels about as reasonably as you’ll find them. Just about every idea on this form requires water for mixing, cooking, etc., and without it, nobody will survive for long. Come to think of it, I think I’ll go buy a few more barrels and fill them. A few drops of bleach in each barrell will keep the water pure and safe to consume.

Glass canning jars, mill, funnels - etc. yes. The pressure canner? Well, yes - but you have to really kind of know your stuff before buying at a garage sale.

The CONDITION the items are in is very important, and if newbies try to buy without doing lots of homework, it could be bad.

I decided to buy the major stuff new and cut the risk out.
