I suppose it's glamorous, but Mama Cass checking out with a ham on rye has more pathos. It's also a warning to chew your food. I already know about the heroin dangers.

Does knowing about Cass date me?

As I said Winehouse will be forgotten tommorrow but The Doors and Janis Joplin actually created something new that influenced many artists. Their influence lives on in contrast to the lowest common denominator slop that passes for music these days. Whether you like it or not is irrelevant.

You can ooh and aaahhh at the paint, but sometimes it's what's under the hood that counts.

Belive me, no "ooh'ing" or "ahh'ing" here, she was disgusting looking. Tattoo's on women just aren't what I'd call "becoming."

Calling her "talented" is like saying Obama's a great President.

Well anyone with eyes could have seen this coming. Chick had put herself on the fast-track to Hell some years back. I just wondered what took so long. Lindsey Lohan will be next.

No, I do not feel nostalgic for the crass, silly orgiastic me-generation symbology that directly destroyed so many lives in Vietnam, and more generally destroyed so much about what made our country great.

Well, the latter part of the 60s was a very innovative period for rock. Some great stuff and yet at the same time some really awful tripe. Socially, we pretty much handed our culture over to the same folks that we are fighting now in an attempt to save the country from complete disaster.

Nonetheless, all that was wrong about that time does nothing to diminish my enjoyment of so much of the music.

Hendrix Jim Morrison Janis Cobain Pete Ham—Badfinger Brian Jones

Essentially, all these individuals committed suicide and robbed the world of their talent.

I didn't call her talented, either, but I am not familliar with her stuff. Essentially, I was drawing a vehicular metaphor: it doesn't matter how they look on the outside, it's how they perform.

I guess I never will understand the 'artistic angst' that leads to such severe self-abuse. Pity, she was reasonably pretty in the early picture.

The official findings of the coroner’s inquest were that Cass Eliot died from “fatty myocardial degeneration due to obesity” (i.e., a heart attack brought about by fatty degeneration of the heart muscle fiber), and nothing was found to have been blocking her mouth or throat. Cass Elliot had long been overweight and more than once undertook crash diets to lose a large amount of weight in a relatively short period of time; the prolonged, combined effects of obesity and severe dieting had weakened her heart to the point of failure.

Amy could sing. So can cats.

The differences are that cats sing for free, and don’t destroy themselves with drugs. They are also better at dodging bottles thrown by angry ‘fans’.

Okay.

Whether I like your 60’s faves or not may be irrelevant to you. If is also sort of irrelevant to me.

What would Louis Armstrong have preferred? Who would Sarah Vaughan, Ella, or Billie have preferred? Without a doubt these true immortals - Armstrong being perhaps the single-most “influential” musician of the 20th century, would call Joplin a crass, screechy, drugged-out ass who gave voice to a crass, screechy, drugged out time. Yes, perhaps “innovative just like” Joe Cocker.

You may have fond memories of the time, and you might love the music. I adore CSNY’s music myself!.

However, if a vocalist is a “musician,” Winehouse is, UNARGUABLY the finest musician, and indeed the only serious musician, in this group of three.

I agree to a great extent. But for me at least, the older I get, my enjoyment is indeed seriously diminished. I have tried, for instance, to enjoy CSNY concerts, but as I've learned about the raw repercussions of the basic 'if it feels good do it / screw the establishment' aspects of so much of the lyricism of the (mid-mid-late) 60's, it just gets harder and harder to love as I once did. Winehouse however (whatever she stood for) simply did what she did very well: she used a very unusual, blase but dynamic vocal style against all sorts of cool syncopations and irreverent punky lyrics, and generated a very unique and, to me attractive, sound. I believe she will be remembered for some time.

On this point we shall agree 100%. Someone posted earlier on this thread that sometimes really artistic and creative people are very insecure about themselves and need constant re-inforcement (ie: yes, your fans really like you!) They also spend lots of time alone in hotel rooms, unable to go out in public by themselves without being recognized and swamped by fans and potentially put in danger. Therefore, these artists are heavily shielded and protected by their agents, security guards, etc.. and get little real human interaction. Some in these cases turn to drugs to "relieve" that angst, and end up getting hooked (and worse, in Winehouses' case.)

When I read that it made some sense.

Pity, she was reasonably pretty in the early picture.

I saw the side-by-side picture showing the younger Amy and the older Amy and thought to myself "did that young girl have any inkling whatsoever of what lay in front of her?" I think she did based on the serious look on her face. Most around that age have an eager expectation of life and it shows. She didn't.

Winehouse is just another (yawn) singer to be forgotten tommorow. She created nothing really new. Musician? I haven’t seen evidence of anything unusual that countless amateurs can’t do.

Since she died at 27 the comparison came up to Joplin and Morrison and this can be extended to Jimi Hendrix as well. They created styles of music and had major influence on many other musicians. That’s the difference between being remembered 40 years later and being forgotten within a year.
