Jane Fonda: "The Truth About My Trip To Hanoi"
JaneFonda.com ^ | July 22, 2011 | Jane Fonda

Posted on 07/22/2011 11:01:03 PM PDT by Keltik

It is unconscionable that extremist groups circulate letters which accuse me of horrific things, saying that I am a traitor, that POWs in Hanoi were tied up and in chains and marched passed me while I spat at them and called them ‘baby killers. These letters also say that when the POWs were brought into the room for a meeting I had with them, we shook hands and they passed me tiny slips of paper on which they had written their social security numbers. Supposedly, this was so that I could bring back proof to the U.S. military that they were alive. The story goes on to say that I handed these slips of paper over to the North Vietnamese guards and, as a result, at least one of the men was tortured to death.

That these stories could be given credence shows how little people know of the realities in North Vietnam prisons at the time. The U.S. government and the POW families didn’t need me to tell them who the prisoners were. They had all their names. Moreover, according to even the most hardcore senior officers, torture stopped late in 1969, two and a half years before I got there. And, most importantly, I would never say such things to our servicemen, whom I respect, whether or not I agree with the mission they have been sent to perform, which is not of their choosing.

But these lies have circulated for almost forty years, continually reopening the wound of the Vietnam War and causing pain to families of American servicemen. The lies distort the truth of why I went to North Vietnam and they perpetuate the myth that being anti-war means being anti-soldier.

"What's the most painful prolonged form of cancer? That's what I hope she gets."

She's already had one form for over forty years. It's called socialist, liberal brain cancer. Your brain rots for years until you're a pathetic POS crying that everybody hates & misunderstands you.

I can't believe she thinks anyone will fall for this BS. Imagine (Isolationist, anti-war) Charles Lindbergh visiting Berlin during WWII, having his picture taken with the Waffen/SS, or sitting in a Panzer with a Nazi helmet on (because he was "required" to), singing songs with the German troops, starting "F--- the war" groups at home, hanging out with Nazi sympathizers for 15 years after the war, etc. What would people think?

Notice that the comments page has 3 pro-Fonda notes. Wonder why she doesn't show all of the ones she's really received. I'd wager there are hundreds that are of a slightly different perspective.

From the article:
“There is one thing that happened while in North Vietnam that I will regret to my dying day— I allowed myself to be photographed on a Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun. I want to, once again, explain how that came about. I have talked about this numerous times on national television and in my memoirs, My Life So Far, but clearly, it needs to be repeated.”

Gee, Jane, they never would have tricked you into that propaganda shot if you just HAD NOT GONE TO NORTH VIETNAM! Forget the traitor-versus-patriot thing for a moment, what do you not understand about common sense? On that same note, when will you give up trying to defend your actions? You were wrong. Deal with it like an adult.

I can’t write certain things about Jane Fonda, otherwise would be censored.

She gave aid and comfort to the enemy.

She completely confuses and misrepresents the idea of protest against our government, such as done by anti-war protesters of that era, and giving aid and comfort to the enemy. The anti-war protesters in this country did not travel to Hanoi, make anti-American broadcasts, and allow themselves to be used as propaganda tools.

I will never understand why she was never prosecuted for treason, or even any lesser offense. Travel by Americans to North Vietnam was not allowed then. Yet somehow she was able to travel there and do what she did.

She has the liberal mindset that she can do whatever the he** she wants, and that there are no consequences. I think she is p***sed off that years later, there are still consequences to her behavior.

I believe she was a tool for North Viet Nam. She was young and ignorant of how this would be portrayed, and she’s paid a price for it.

However, those who are ignorant shouldn’t get a pass on their actions.

I hope she will always and forever be remembered for her treasonous ways.

We’re wasting our time on her because she made a public issue of her not being allowed to sell her crap on QVC television. Rather than quietly accepting that, she chose to go on a media offensive on the subject.

I would be happy not to hear or see anything about her ever again, but, if she forces herself into the news with self-serving actions, we should tell her that critical masses of people disagree strongly with her.

A few Hanoi Jane quotes:

• “I want to publicly accuse Nixon here of being a new-type Hitler whose crimes are being unveiled.”

• “The Vietnamese people will win.”

• “Nixon is continuing to risk your [American pilots’] lives and the lives of the American prisoners of war . . . in a last desperate gamble to keep his office come November. How does it feel to be used as pawns? You may be shot down, you may perhaps even be killed, but for what, and for whom?”

• “[President Nixon] defiles our flag and all that it stands for in the eyes of the entire world.”

• “Knowing who was doing the lying, should you then allow these same people and some liars to define for you who your enemy is?”

• “The only way to end the war is for the United States to withdraw all its troops, all its airplanes, its bombs, its generals, its CIA advisors and to stop the support of the . . . regime in Saigon . . . .”

• “There is only one way to stop Richard Nixon from committing mass genocide in the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, and that is for a mass protest . . . to expose his crimes . . . .”

• “In 1969-1970 the desertions in the American army tripled. The desertions of the U.S. soldiers almost equaled the desertions from the ARVN army . . . .”

• “Perhaps the soldiers . . . who have suffered the most . . . [are] the black soldiers, the brown soldiers, and the red and Asian soldiers.”

• “Should we be fighting on the side of the people who are, who are murdering innocent people, should we be trying to defend a government in Saigon which is putting in jail tens of thousands of people into the tiger cages, beating them, torturing them . . . . And I don’t think . . . that we should be risking our lives or fighting to defend that kind of government.”

• “We . . . have a common enemy—U. S. imperialism.”

• “We thank you [the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese] for your brave and heroic fight.”

• “Nixon’s aggression against Vietnam is a racist aggression [and] the American war in Vietnam is a racist war, a white man’s war.”

• “I heard horrifying stories about the treatment of women in the U.S. military. So many women said to me that one of the first things that happens to them when they enter the service is that they are taken to see the company psychiatrist and they are given a little lecture which is made very clear to them that they are there to service the men.”

• “The POWs appear to be healthy and fit. . . . All of them have called publicly for an end to the war and signed a powerful antiwar letter . . . .”

• “A few of them [the POWs] tell me they, too, are against the war and want Nixon to be defeated in the upcoming elections. They express their fear that if he is reelected, the war will go on and on . . . and that bombs might land on their prison.”

• “I am asked to convey their [the POWs’] hopes that their families will vote for George McGovern.”

• “I ask them [POWs] if they feel they have been brainwashed or tortured, and they laugh.”

• “We read with interest about the growing numbers of you [South Vietnam Army troops] who are understanding the truth and joining with your fellow countrymen to fight for freedom and independence and democracy [i.e., with the Communists]. . . . We think that this is an example of the fact that the democratic, peace-loving, patriotic Vietnamese people want to embrace all Vietnamese people in forgiveness, open their arms to all people who are willing to fight against the foreign intruder.

November 22, 1970 -- During a fund-raising tour for GI deserters, Vietnam Veterans Against the War and the Black Panthers, Jane Fonda is quoted in the Detroit Free Press as telling a University of Michigan audience:

"I would think that if you understood what communism was, you would hope, you would pray on your knees that we would someday become communist," and "The peace proposal of the Viet Cong is the only honorable, just, possible way to achieve peace in Vietnam."
http://www.wintersoldier.com/index.php?topic=Timeline

Fonda made the following statement at the University of Texas:
"We've got to establish a Socialist economic structure that will limit private profit-oriented businesses. Whether the transition is peaceful depends on the way our present governmental leaders react. We must commit our lives to this transition ...... We should be very proud of our new breed of soldier. It's not organized but it's mutiny, and they have every right." --Karen Elliott Dallas Morning News December 11, 1971

From 1972: "I am not a do-gooder, I am a revolutionary. A revolutionary woman."

Monday, February 2 at 7:00pm and 9:15pm
7:00pm show sold out!

FTA (1972, Francine Parker), the Vietnam War-era documentary, will have an ultra-rare screening in a restored archival print with former FTA cast member Jane Fonda in person, Monday, February 2 at 7:00pm and 9:15pm; the 7:00pm show is sold out. Following the screening, Ms. Fonda will talk about the film and her work in the controversial antiwar touring show in a discussion moderated by David Zeiger, director of the recent documentary Sir! No Sir! A portion of the proceeds from the evening will benefit Iraq Veterans against the War, a nonprofit organization that advocates for ending the war and for providing support to returning service members.

Virtually unseen in any format since a brief theatrical run in 1972, FTA documents "the show the Pentagon couldn't stop." The revue, whose letters were said to stand both for Free Theater Associates and also Free (or, at times, another F-word) The Army, brought antiwar entertainment to military personnel at the height of Vietnam. Performers like Ms. Fonda, Donald Sutherland and Holly Near toured towns near military bases around the US and overseas, lending their support to troops who opposed the war. The film follows the troupe as it travels and performs near US military bases on the Pacific Rim -- Hawaii, Okinawa, the Philippines -- encouraging opposition to the war among the rank-and-file of US forces.

FTA is a gritty mix of rollicking performances and GI interviews, juxtaposing lighthearted political satire with the somber realities of war, occupation, and the absurdities of military life, a barbed rebuke to the staid USO program. From Okinawa to the Philippines, stirred by the show's provocative message, the members of the U.S. military find courage to speak out candidly in front of the camera.

Fonda and Sutherland are joined on stage by an all-star cast of musicians and activists including folk musician Len Chandler and comedian Paul Mooney. A fresh look at the Vietnam anti-war movement through the songs and skits that shook a generation, this film will leave you singing along with the fired-up men and women of the military. Foxtrot, Tango, Alpha... F*** the Army!

Print courtesy of the Academy Film Archive.

Tickets: $12 IFC Center members, $15 general admission.

"Create Public Opinion, Seize Power: We are preparing minds and organizing forces for the time when there is a major crack in the system, whenever it comes and wherever it comes from: an opening that makes it possible to bring the future Revolutionary Army of the Proletariat (R.A.P.) into the field and wage a revolutionary armed struggle that actually has a chance of winning.

Supposedly, this was so that I could bring back proof to the U.S. military that they were alive.

Or their personal identificators which we all had to create and have on file in case we were shot down, something the zips wouldn't know. Just a word, just a hope, easy, peasey, Vietnamesey.

Those hopes were dashed, your holiday in Hanoi and photoshoot caused more suffering than you could ever know, Jane.

Look on this and rethink your deed in the past and your weak explanation today. You're in your 70's today....most of them are not. Today isn't the time to publish more lies since we still remember.

You are a notch above Hanoi Hannah. Live with it.
