On a seperate discussion the topic of bug-out bags came up and I thought it might be a good general topic for discussion. What everyone has in theirs, what is recommended, weights, why those items, more than one, differences for different family members, etc.
Survival kit contents check. In them youll find:
- One forty-five caliber automatic

- Four days concentrated emergency rations
- One drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine,
vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills
- One miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible
- One hundred dollars in rubles
- One hundred dollars in gold
- Nine packs of chewing gum
- One issue of prophylactics
- Three lipsticks
- Three pair of nylon stockings.
Shoot, a fella could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff.
Beat me to it! Interesting point: that quote was originally about a weekend in Dallas but the flick was released a few days after Kennedy was killed here and the producers thought it would be in bad taste so they changed it to Vegas.
I’m not going anywhere, I mean hell, where would I go? I have lived a good long life, and Garland TX seems like a good place to die. (/sarc)
Good stuff. However, may I humbly suggest consolidating your carbine and pistol for one of the somewhat more concealable 5.56 pistols?
200 yard range with assault rifle firepower. Stows in just about anything you’d use for a BOB without alerting everyone who can put an eyeball on you you’re heavily armed.
What’s not to like?
What’s not to like? Muzzle blast, for one. I’ve shot a couple of ‘em over the years. Muzzle flash was pretty ferocious, too, as I recall. I get enough bark from my 16” barrel AR carbine as it is.
I use Silencio earplugs - these are the ones that allow you to hear what’s going on around you, but block transients and high impulse sounds well enough to protect your hearing. They’re comfortable enough to wear all day long, and I’ve tested that premise at Appleseed shoots.
Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal preference.
We think alike. I’m already where I want to be. I want to be sure that I can get back here when things start getting ugly. When those ATMs shut down, it’ll get... unpleasant in less than than an hour.
At a minimum I would add in.
Rain gear
Three or four pairs of socks
sharpening stone
small metal mirror
Asprin
Laxative
Kotex for bandages
Tampax for Mrs.
Sports bra for Mrs.
toilet paper
Sunburn lotion
sunglasses
magnifying glass
fishing line w/hooks
Dial soap
Razor blades
small metal bowl, 1 qt.
>>If the SHTF, I dont think a safe exit from the Chicago burbs is feasible.<<
On a small motorbike it would be.
Thanks for the tip.
I put one together around 20 years ago, more out of curiosity/fun than thinking I would really need it.
I need to get it out and check it over just to see what is there. I don’t think there is anything perishable except maybe some water purification tablets and they probably last a long time.
A few things I know are in there are: 500 rounds of .22LR., a bunch of fire starting devices, a lot of cord and rolls of wire. Gerber and Leatherman tools, knives, sharpening stone, and a hatchet. Bandage, athletic tape, and band aids.
I might get it out right now and check.
We bug in....
Well I just checked my bag and was surprised by a few things. A really large number of candles and a candle lantern,
A bag of latex gloves. I have no idea why I packed them. Even more matches fire starters etc than I thought. Plastic eating utensils still in their plastic. Compass. Boy Scout handbook. Writing pens, several packs of small nails. Sewing kit. brush (again I don’t know why), more needles, more sewing thread, even more compasses. Scotch tape?
150 yards of 80lbs test fishing line. hooks. fairly large mirror. Referee’s whistle. Small mirror. Swiss Army knives, whetstones plus other sharpeners. Several rolls of coated wire.
A lot of other odds and ends which are buried in bag. There are a lot of little packs of toilet paper from MREs which I would remove but they are so light I will just leave them.
It is all in a large gym bag. I would guess half the area is taken up with various fire starters and candles.
I didn’t have a .22 LR pistol as I always have it at hand and would just naturally grab it.
I might put together another one. Take out some of the candles and replace it with first aid and other medications.
Also swap out a few other things such as the brush. Also noticed there was a steel eating utensil set so will take out the plastic ones.
Just noticed a small notebook and two space blankets in original packing. Also could not find the Gerber and Leatherman tools so will put some in. Also replace the scotch tape with duct tape.
Now that I think about it, I am way too old to live off the land so will just stay home.
I probably do need to keep all my gasoline containers full, using them in a regular cycle. Also keep my vehicles tanks full.
When I get the money, will get another generator. The one I have is only 3000 watts. It will run the refrigerator but not the AC. I do have a small one in my bedroom window just for emergencies and it will run that one.
Toss a couple of those Aim N Flame lighters in. The other fire starters are great and I have similar in my OSK’s (Oh s*** Kits) but you can’t go wrong having a couple of those. LOL
All highways out of the city will be blocked by wrecks, bodies, and trash within a 10 mile ring. Beyond that, staying at a well-prepared home is the better bet.
I start with fire and water purification
magnesium fire starter
and pool shock a one pound bag will clean 2000 gal of water.
survival book
compass
Whistle
survival kit in a can (that is the size of a sardine can with 38 items that can help save your life.)
chocolate bar
small bottles of liquor
pocket Constitution
NEED a small Bible
matches
compass
2 emergency blankets
handwarmers
neosporin
AND that doesn’t include my 1st aide kit which is huge!
The old TT-33 pistol fires 7.62 X 25 light machine gun ammo. Very reliable. Very high penetration. Very cheap.
good one...lol....
Seems to me the most important stuff is the stuff in your head.
How are your skills?
