Action is needed now to prevent nightmarish "Planet Of The Apes" science ever turning from fiction to fact, according to a group of eminent experts.
Their report calls for a new rules to supervise sensitive research that involves humanising animals.
One area of concern is "Category Three" experiments which may raise "very strong ethical concerns" and should be banned.
An example given is the creation of primates with distinctly human characteristics, such as speech.
Exactly the same scenario is portrayed in the new movie Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, in which scientists searching for an Alzheimer's cure create a new breed of ape with human-like intelligence.
The report also acknowledges the "Frankenstein fear" that humanising animals might lead to the creation of "monsters".

Come to think of it--maybe it was rat brain cells into humans. You don't think... No. It couldn't be.
Could it?
The fear is that if you start putting very large numbers of human brain cells into the brains of primates ...
Why stop at brain cells? Why stop at primates?
Is an organism with 1% human DNA human? 50%? 90%? If they transplant 100% human DNA into a gorilla egg cell, implant it into a female gorilla, and she gives birth, is the offspring a gorilla that looks remarkably human, or a human who has used a gorilla as a host mother?
Guaranteed, researchers will push the limits.
Recommend the late, GREAT Michael Crichton’s “NEXT”.
Very interesting take on cross-species experimentation and other genomic twists.
I don’t think “genomic” is a word (yet), but it sounds hell kewl.
“Greek animal-man creatures”
Just what we need....another Minotaur!
I still want a mini giraffe.
I wanna see the new movie, but I know that I’m gonna sit there thinking, “I’ve got a dozens of guns and tens of thousands of rounds of ammo at home. Meh.”
I’m more worried that the planet is becoming the society depicted in the movie Idiocracy.
Nah - The article is talking about animals with human-like intelligence.
Scientists have become whores.
They will promote “science” to advertise your new movie, if you ask politely.
They will pretend that Global Warming is real, if you give them grants.
They will swear that DDT is dangerous, if such a claim promotes a useful agenda
Side complaint: The Day After Tomorrow had so many problems with physics I couldn't take the premise seriously - it was like the above-the-surface version of The Core: fun to watch with the volume off.
Hmmmmmm? Are those those Nazi Scientists still alive out there? The quest for the Ubersoldier is still in the works? Sounds like a Post WW II Tabloid report.
Lets just talk numbers. There are only 350,000 apes in the world.
They couldn’t take over France.
I know right?
If this situation really happened, the apes would easily take over the Northeast and hippieville but the instant they crossed over into the south and “redneck” land, it would be open season on their a****.
They’d last 2 days before they were shot and stuffed for trophies. Kinda like the old joke of “If you want to end the terrorism, drop a bunch of rednecks in Iraq, declare open season on all terrorists with no ROE, and sit back and enjoy the show”
I know some pretty “country” boys and they’d welcome the chance to hunt some apes like that. It’d be like Christmas!
Oh yes, they could. It’s France.
You meant to say they couldn’t take over the South or Midwest didn’t you? ;)
We have a new model to be unveiled next month.
I’m quite sure I have seen some of those hybridized monsters at inner-city Walmarts already.
Western ethics and personal morals which governed these extremes within professional men and women, have been cleansed from our culture.
Situational ethics would say that if the creation of human hybrids advances a group’s science and/or profit motives, it is good. The consequences on the society around them is of no concern to them.
The same thing happened to the bankster industry.
