A new Los Angeles law makes it a crime for motorists to harass bicyclists, verbally or physically.

California, the land of wonder....
Damn, now what am I going to do to those annoying cyclists?
those dang slow moving bikes think they are cars, until they have to obey a traffic light.
Why not make it “hate crime?”
Up until now it was ok to physically assault bicyclists there?
physically assault = “physically harass”
With this law the only safe thing to do is shot them! ;-)
shot = shoot
“Up until now it was ok to physically assault bicyclists there?”
Yes, it used to be Justice. I get a $400 ticket and Traffic School for rolling through a stopsign, bicyclists don’t, so to balance it, we could pull cycle people off their bikes and rough them up. Compassionately, of course.
Now I go to jail for flipping a cyclist off when he rides three abreast on a two lane street.
That could be painful, inasmuch as I carry when I bicycle.
Wow ! And the law allows the bicyclist to file suit without criminal charges ! I do a lot of biking but also when I ride, I prefer to stay on bike paths that are separate from the road. I am not exactly comfortable with bike lanes especially with people these days texting and chatting on their phones instead of concentrating on driving.
Who knew?
On top of "hate crimes"....
This was probably motivated by the actions of homicidal maniacs like the one in this story from a few years ago.

What about all those a-hole drivers who cut off bicyclists or who open doors directly in their paths? Happens all the time to me here in New York City.
Of course, there’s been a law on the books for years which made it a crime for a cyclist to harass a motorist, so it’s only fair that the reverse should be true.
Right?
It would be interesting to see their reaction to a suggestion that they be licensed, inspected, and taxed like autos if they're going to be on the road. Let's make sure they have good brakes, tires, and proper night-time illumination - and hit them with a fee for the inspection too.
How do to pedal uphill with that Minigun on your back?
Oh, wait! It’s mounted on the handlebars. I forgot.
;-)
I bike, I jog, I drive and am often a pedestrians.
Bikers can be rude.
Joggers can be rude.
Drivers can be rude.
Pedestrians can be rude.
I wonder what those 4 groups have in common?
(Reminds me of an old joke: When I drink whiskey and water I get drunk. When I drink bourbon and water I get drunk. When I drink Scotch and water I get drunk. It must be the water.)
