General Motors was on hand at this years Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas where it announced a number of new high-tech products including the OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle) kit. The automaker just announced that the first batches of OnStar FMV units are set to arrive at Best Buy on July 24.
The kit will allow owners of non-GM brands to retrofit the rearview mirror module into their own cars and enjoy all of the features the system offers. Likewise, owners of older GM vehicles will be able to purchase the kit as well. GM has priced the kit at $299.99 with service plans that start at $18.95 or $199 a year. The partnership with Best Buy will also allow customers to have the system professionally installed at the store for $75.
The wait is over, said OnStar President Linda Marshall. Since we announced OnStar FMV at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, thousands of people have signed up to be notified when this innovative product is ready to buy. Now, through Best Buy, they can enhance their Fords, Toyotas, Chryslers and other brands with the power of OnStar.
The OnStar FMV will offer all the same features found on GM cars such as automatic crash response, turn-by-turn navigation, stolen vehicle assistance hands-free calling and roadside assistance.
Bingo!
Yup, I feel the exact same way. My vehicle came with it and I proceeded to remove it totally from the vehicle.
Went back to the dealership and all they did was pester me about “Why on earth would you remove that... dont you want to feel SAFFEEE!!!”
Told them, thanks, but I feel safer when no one is watching my every move.. not that its exciting and all.. but I demand privacy in my own vehicle.
I love OnStar. It got me out of some serious jams that a bad GPS got me in.

"RECALCULATING!"
>>> like starting your car from your cell phone. Why would anyone ever want to?
Depends. Does your ex play with explosives too?
>>> After I heard of cases where the FBI remotely turned on the OnStar microphone to listen to conversations in cars in some cases, I swore I would never have an OnStar
I’m not worried. After a few hours of listening to me sing along to Joni Mitchell cd’s, the FBI would permanently block any further transmissions from my device.
No way i’m going to give any company or government the ability to control my vehicle or even track me!
“Because its not just about GPS.”
That is waht makes it total shit!
The government, state and federal should give tax refunds for the expense of these systems because of the stolen vehicle recovery system. It cuts down on pursuits, almost ensures capture and enhances prosecution. Sadly, it does nothing to to ensure a lenghty prison sentence...
I calculate the risk of getting hit with a meteorite to be greater
