LEADVILLE, Colo. -- A black bear went into a tent in a central-Colorado campground and bit or scratched a sleeping teenage boy's arm.

State wildlife officials say the boy was camping out with his family in the mountains near Leadville when the bear grabbed him early Friday. Colorado Division of Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton tells KMGH-TV the boy needed medical care, but his wounds didn't appear to be life-threatening.

Thanks.

I'm back at home to normalcy now. Hard to believe just 2 days ago I was at 10,000 ft in the Rubies watching Himalayan snowcocks, black rosy-finches, and Rocky Mountain goats.

I stunk like 'em too.

And thanks for the pings!

It seems the black bears in Colorado are becoming more aggressive.

Some bears do kill and eat humans.

Oh, they do, but very rare for black bears. Remember a few years ago one dragged that young girl out of a tent in the night? They guessed it was her honey shampoo that drew him/her in as I recall.

Just seems most of these bold bears have been acclimated to equating people with food.

Every since big out-of-state money bought a ban on the spring hunt. That bit of "citizen initiative" became a constitutional amendment, so it will be very hard to fix.

Any recent attacks near you ?

The ecos have taken over the BLM / USFS...so sheep grazing and cattle grazing allotments have been vacated all over.

Thanks for the ping and welcome back Fly.

Around 1971 or so we camped at Yosemite and were on one of the outer loops. There were a lot of campers but that didn’t deter the black bears, it was like we were invading their territory.

One was at the back door of the camper one afternoon, probably smelled food inside. I made a lot of noise and he looked at me like I was bothering him but he left.

That night I walked across the road to take a shower, the facility was about 100’ away. When I returned the wife said I almost collided with a bear walking down the road and I didn’t even know it.

Back then crowded campgrounds seemed to attract them, they knew there was food. :-)

I would say that is the most common case. But in Alaska, Canada, and other places where there are not many people, the bears likely had no dealings with people and just saw and smelled another potential prey.

“Just seems most of these bold bears have been acclimated to equating people with food.”

That has occurred because enviro-communism has removed the citizen’s 2nd Amendment rights. When large bodied predators are not regularly shot and killed by humans, said predators loose the fear that our ancestors had created with constant hunting/shooting.

When gunpowder speaks, beasts obey.

For most of man’s history, he was just a slow moving, easy to kill, source of protein. Gunpowder made man the pinnacle predator.

Enviro-socialism put the beastly behavior back in the beasts.

Ha! And DOW. I have more than a few unfilled tags because I never cheat. About done with that crap. I know sever REALLY good hunters who grew up here. They all say a public land tag is a suckers bet any more.

Many places elk is bigger money than cattle. Being polite won't get you permission, you have to get your checkbook out.

At least my unfilled tags help pay them for "game damage".

Remember :

John Chelminiak who was mauled by the black bear at the end of the driveway to his holiday home in Lake Wenatchee, Washington. ?

He had been out walking his dogs when the bear struck and could be heard shouting “I’m dying” as he was attacked by a bear outside his home.

Spot on. And people will die because of it. Mostly kids because they behave like prey.

We had a ranch hand in Colorado who was sucker-punched by a black bear after he left an outhouse.

After the man was answering the call of nature...

The black bear had staked out the out house.

Somewhere there is a cartoon -—the bear Olympics as an eskimo tries to run to / from his outhouse while a bear is watching

I guess I missed that one. A ten year old with no cubs though. Trash can bear?

There have been increased sightings of pumas in the west metro green belts off the foothills the last few years. Why not? Can’t shoot them and poodles are easy to catch. So are little kids...

It is too dangerous to leave windows open on the ground floor anymore.

So people have buy and install air conditioning units $$$, then run them $$$, or live in a hot house with the windows closed.

Thank you Sierra Club.

Since the 1880’s, sheep herders and cowboys would take care of any predator attacking their animals.

That's the smart thing to do.

It's much better to camp in the sticks and you don't have to contend with human critters. :-)

We have a scout group hiking in nearby Bear country. They are required to have separate , sleep only clothes .
Anything scented, including tooth paste, sunscreen goes in a suspended Bear bag at night. This seems to help with Bear encounters.

Yep. I know a guy who lives in Monte Vista. When he was a kid they used to run cattle from La Porte on the lower Pouter up towards Gould to graze for the summer. He loved the life, but never left his Winchester where ever he went.
