Ex-boyfriend accused of writing 'I love you' in blood of Stillwater woman's slain pet snake

A jilted ex-lover in Stillwater is accused of going to his former flame's home, where he killed her pet snake and wrote "I loved you" with its blood.

When police arrived at the ex-girlfriend's home, Jonathan Paul Utecht, 21, was standing outside with blood on his hands and told the woman, who was with the officers, "that she did not want to go inside the apartment and see what he had done," according to a criminal complaint.

Utecht was charged today with felony counts of burglary and terroristic threats.

His initial court appearance will be July 28.

Police were alerted to the incident when the ex-girlfriend approached two officers at Lily Lake Park and asked for their help about 1:45 a.m. Wednesday. She said she believed her ex-boyfriend had broken into her apartment on Myrtle Street and may have "destroyed it," the criminal complaint said.

Police confirmed that her apartment had been ransacked. Many items were broken, including lamps, mirrors and a glass aquarium. Coffee grounds had been scattered in the kitchen. And someone wrote "I will kill you" and "(expletive) cheater" in black marker.

Police also found the woman's snake on the kitchen floor, a knife "sticking in the midsection," the complaint said. They suspected the words "I loved you," which were on the floor next to the snake, had been written in the animal's blood.

Utecht admitted to police that he had damaged items in the apartment and said "he killed the snake because (the woman) loved the snake," according to the complaint. He said he did it because he thought she had cheated on him.

The woman said she and Utecht dated on and off for a year, and that he moved out of the apartment six months ago.

Utecht said he no longer had a key to the apartment, but had stolen one recently, which is how he gained entry that evening, the complaint said.

Utecht does not appear to have a criminal record in Minnesota.

"he killed the snake because (the woman) loved the snake," according to the complaint. He said he did it because he thought she had cheated on him.

True or false: No heavy use of licit or illicit drugs had anything to do with the events in this story.

The sort of woman who keeps pet snakes also probably has a higher-than-average probability of having a crazy boyfriend.

I also wonder how many tattoos they have between them?

Utecht was charged today with felony counts of burglary and terroristic threats.

The words "terrorism" or "terroristic" are thrown around very liberally these days. Unless a Muslim is involved -- then those words are avoided like the plague.

Am thinking of the NCIS episode of Pauley Perrette and her crazy boyfriend who stalked her and tried to kill her.

I predict he’ll be getting some heavy doses of drugs where he’s going.

Way to win her heart, pal....(sheesh!)

is there anything weirder than the "ex-boyfriend" -- which, of course, means "the dumped ex-boyfriend?"

Seems like they're a pretty dangerous breed.

writing “I love you” in the blood of my girlfriend’s pet snake always worked for me. I mean, what could go wrong

Nothing says “I love you and only want us to be happy together” like killing someone’s pet.

What a twisted man.

Nice little blanket judgement there. There is nothing wrong, creepy, evil, etc about keeping snakes.

May not be wrong or evil but it’s definitely creepy.

What a twisted man.

A good match, then, for the sort of woman who conisiders a snake a "pet."

reminds me of the raven-haired beauty that put her iguana on my back.... do you know how sharp their claws are?

creepy how? it is kinda creepy that people use a word like ‘creepy’ when it is not warranted.

when it is not warranted.

Well, who says it's "not warranted?" I say it is.

Some people keep rats as "pets." Some people like to be tied up and whipped for "pleasure." They think "creepy" is "not warranted" then, too. You don't have to think it's creepy. In fact, it would be really creepy if you thought it was creepy and did it anyway.

But you can take my word for it, it's creepy. Or, if you prefer, "just a little off."
