Vanilla, Chocolate Top List of Favorite Ice Cream Flavors
Thursday, July 14, 2011
When it comes to frozen treats, Americans prefer to keep it simple.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Adults who eat ice cream at least occasionally finds that 23% say vanilla is best, while the same number (23%) prefers chocolate. Nine percent (9%) like butter pecan the most, while strawberry and cookies and cream each earn eight percent (8%) of the vote.
Six percent (6%) prefer mint chocolate chip, and another four percent (4%) choose coffee flavored ice cream. Seventeen percent (17%) prefer some other flavor not mentioned in the survey. (To see survey question wording, click here.)
While men put vanilla at the top of the list, women do the same with chocolate.
While white adults prefer chocolate to vanilla 24% to 19%, black adults prefer vanilla by a 43% to 14% margin.

The national survey of 800 Adults Who Eat Ice Cream was conducted on July 7-8, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.
Among adults who eat ice cream more than once a week, 28% pick vanilla while 22% like chocolate more. Those who eat ice cream only occasionally are torn between the two popular flavors.
Most ice cream eaters (78%) usually buy it at the store and eat it at home rather than go to an ice cream parlor. Seventeen percent (17%) would prefer going to an ice cream parlor for their treat.
American pizza-eaters rate Pizza Hut number one among pizza chains, closely followed by Papa Johns. But nearly one-out-of-five adults say they rarely or never eat pizza no matter who makes it.
In a showdown among the top three fast-food hamburger chains, Americans prefer Wendys over McDonalds and Burger King.
When it comes to coffee, 23% of coffee drinkers say they are more likely to buy it from Starbucks, while 22% each opt for either a convenience store or a local coffee shop. Fourteen percent (14%) get their coffee from Dunkin' Donuts, and 15% say they purchase it somewhere else.
Cheese is milk’s attempt at immortality.
Chocolate chip cookie dough for me.
It is the most refreshing, unique flavor of ice cream you will ever taste. I miss it so much that I taught myself to make it!
A close second is Chocolate Mint Chip. The best ice cream on the planet is at the Penn State Creamery (they taught Ben and Jerry how to make ice cream).
Google them and you can order online for pretty reasonable prices.
And therein lies the dissertation in psychology.
Grape Nut
Eew
Recipe, please!!!!
Vanilla (the good stuff, not fake) ... With or without embellishment.
Strawberry deserts must be really beautiful! :o)
Chocolate chip cookie dough is the most popular at our house. I’m shocked it didn’t make the most popular list because the grocery store often runs out of it when there is a sale on ice cream.
I have real trouble, though, saying it’s the absolute best when there are so many really great flavors out there. So, I’m gonna give a shout out to pumpkin, strawberry, pecan praline, moose tracks, pina colada, banana nut, black walnut, strawberry cheesecake and homemade vanilla, and lime sherbet. Good thing God made summertime.
Who paid for this worthless poll? BTW, around here it is Turtle. It is so overwhelmingly Turtle that I know one custard stand that puts Turtle on its menu 4 times a month. And then for good measure, they throw in Turtle Cheesecake one. Of course they always offer vanilla and chocolate too.
The owner of that business says they get a bump in business every tine Turtle is on the menu.
Same here.
Buttered pecan FTW.
