Madison Lefties Say Democracy Died With the Geese
Newsbusters ^ | 7-12-11 | Tim Graham

Somehow, liberal Mayor Paul Soglin of Madison, Wisconsin is still too conservative for some. The Capital Times reports there will be a protest (or a "memorial service for fallen fowl") tomorrow to denounce the city's unannounced Canada goose roundup. Leftist animal advocates said democracy died with the geese:

"This is a chance for us to get together and mourn the loss to the community not only of the geese, but of the democratic process. We want to know the mayor and the Parks Commission know that we're not going to go away," says Kathie Free of Madison, an organizer of the protest that will include members of the Alliance for Animals and other animal rights groups...

Free and others say the kill was done without adequate notice. One evening the geese were there; the next morning they were gone from Vilas, Olin Turville and Brittingham parks and from public shoreline along Wingra Creek.

Madison parks officials approved the goose kill, at a cost not to exceed $4,900, on May 11. Keeping the precise details of the kill quiet was intentional, Wallner says. "It was done at five in morning because they didn't want people out to scare off the geese," he says. "Was it transparent? Not totally. The city did not want publicity."

That approach makes sense to ensure a successful roundup once it was decided that some geese would have to be removed, Wallner says. And while the public meetings on goose control were dominated by people opposed to killing them, many other city residents were calling for effective action, he says.

"I heard from many, many citizens saying the geese have gotten out of control. They were tired of kids getting covered with goose poo at soccer. Folks could see the parks being diminished and the beaches being soiled," Wallner said. City-county public health officials say goose feces contributes significantly to the closing of city beaches because of bacterial contamination.

Some citizens seem to have their minds made up already about the fallout of the kill. "I really feel betrayed," says Free, who added that she worked as a volunteer on Soglin's campaign. "It's needless carnage in our parks, and that shouldn't be happening in a city like Madison."

In a separate story the Capital Times added the geese were "taken to a meat processor and turned into gooseburgers for area food pantries." [Hat tip: Vicki McKenna.]

I'm willing to bet that the geese left less of a mess than the smelling hippie protestors who occupied the WI state Capitol.

I remember hearing of the goose kill...I was amazed at both the lack of outrage and coverage. It was Madistan, WI for God’s sake. Life is extremely entertaining if looked at from the correct perspective.

If TSHTF, I am counting on geese as a supplement. They are a pestilence around here! Local park is well fertilized by their droppings.

a "memorial service for fallen fowl"

Sounds like a funeral for a dead Massghanistani politico.

Canada geese are taking over, like deer. They need to be harvested and their numbers severely curtailed. Feed 'em to the obamanoids. They'll eat anything Mooch-elle tells them to.

when did the geese die? what, they got sucked into a jet engine?

Oh, I get it. And democracy was the jet. Very clever word picture. But don't forget Chesney Sullenberger.

Chez for Prez!

I wish someone would come get a few thousand of the giant
flying rats/fertilizer factories out of Mid. Tn.. I've quit calling them Canada geese because some of them are 4th generation so must be America Geese by birth.
There must already be some sort of “Dream Act” for illegal wildlife I guess./s

They're probably right. If they put the geese in a voting booth in place of a liberal the results would be more sensible, or at least as sensible.

Has anyone ever eaten goose? Is it greasy, dry, strong in taste?

A dentist on Cape Cod got a hefty fine for killing a Canada Goose on a golf course a few years ago. Elin could have given him some tips.

Wouldn’t it be real justice if the surviving geese all got together and crapped on commie Soglin until he was buried alive in goose shit?

Ah the image!

Say goodby, Paul.

Unfit for consumption from early spring through late summer.

A late fall/winter goose that has been feeding on grain is edible.

What they needed to do was to rent a few dozen adult swans, who are like the Mongol horde of birds, very aggressive, then trick the goose fans into going into a big cage with the swans.

I would lay odds that a 30 pound swan would easily whup a 150 pound gooseophile.

I live with a large grass field behind my house. Last fall, for the first time, Canadian geese started landing there. There was so much poop ... so, so much poop. I don’t really mind, but it had never happened before.

How so? Too tough and with a grass-fed flavor?

I'll bet the geese at the local walking track/duck pond would taste pretty good seeing has how people are always tossing bread to them.

“Democratic” to these people means I always get what I want and you don’t because you’re a Nazi and I’m a “democrat”.
