The ESPN special filmed on Penn State's University Park campus earlier this month is set to air at 8 p.m. tonight on ESPN, followed by a 9 p.m. showing on ESPNU. The special features Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski and is titled "Difference Makers: Life Lessons with Paterno and Krzyzewski".

State football coach Joe Paterno, left, and Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski meet at Penn State in State College, Pa., for the taping of an ESPN show "Difference Makers: Life Lessons with Paterno and Krzyzewski." The show was filmed in front of a live audience at Penn State's Eisenhower Auditorium earlier this month. Paterno and Krzyzewski answered questions from the audience and talked about leadership principles in college athletics.

With 401 wins, Paterno is major college football's all-time winningest coach. He's guided the Nittany Lions to 24 bowl victories and two national championships since becoming head coach in 1966.

Krzyzewski has won four national titles and been named national coach of the year 12 times in his 30 years at Duke.

There have been a lot of stories written about this Q&A the past week. It should be interesting to finally see it. One point that Paterno tries to hammer home is his continued call for Freshman ineligibility for football.

Three thoughts:

I love JoePa, but I’d love to see him retire on top.

Without a split offense of some variety, it is almost impossible to compete - which we do not have.

And I’d love to see a nationwide search for a top coach when JoePa retires, instead of appointing JayPa.

I think Joe’s health is much, much better than it has been the past few years. When the time comes though, my first choice would be Gruden. I think he is the only guy out there that could make us immediately relevant with every top recruit in the country.

Gruden would be a powerful pick. I hope they do a nationwide search. The amazing program deserves it.

I lost a lot of respect for JoePa a few years ago when he tried to tell the public that sports builds character with the observation that if a player, for instance, traps a football catch . . . and knows he trapped it . . . it's ok to let the ref rule it a catch even if the referee really missed it . . . . Obviously, the player will let the illegal catch be a catch if the referee says so, but the whole thing is dishonest from the beginning.

While we all know why the player will let the referee make the mistake, Joe could not equate that event with just plain honesty.

On the other hand, if the coach says it's ok to let the referee make an obvious mistake, then why in the hell does a coach bitch like hell when he disagrees with the call?

It all boils down to "what you can get away with," and the OSU problem with Terrell Prior, et al., is a clear example of "what you can get away with."

The NCAA, almost the college coaches, and players have lost what little respect I had for the whole bunch.

Joe Paterno has instilled more character into more young men than you could possibly imagine. Your post makes absolutely no sense.

at least it’s not again about that idiot p-resident and his NCAA brackets. Andy Katz was literally drooling on the kenyan klown..

Just so I'm clear...you're equating allowing a ref to make a close call with blatant NCAA violations?

That's certainly some interesting "logic".

Sorry, but going along with a blatantly bad call "just because" is dishonest. Too bad I'm advocating honesty . . . instead of the "get away with it" mentality in sports and government.JoePa is no icon in my book.

make a close call

Sorry, but going along with a blatantly bad call "just because" is dishonest. Too bad I'm advocating honesty . . . instead of the "get away with it" mentality in sports and government. I'm not sure where the "life's lesson" and character building is taught in my example of looking the other way.

JoePa is no icon in my book. It's quite obvious that the obscene corruption of the NCAA does not stop at JoePa, but please don't hold him up as an icon of nobility.

Paterno should have retired several years ago.

He’s done great things for the PSU football program no doubt, and deserves the veneration of a true coaching legend. But there comes a time when you need to let the next generation take it.

A year or two ago I was watching a Penn State game and watched JoePa on the sidelines - no headset, no discussion with his assistants in the booth, no input into the game. One of the last plays of the game was a turnover, and the cameras focused on Paterno.. it was easy to lip-read. “What happened?” said Joe to no one in particular. No one in particular answered.

That’s when I came to the conclusion that Coach Paterno should retire.

Did they ask Krzyzewski about the ridiculous favoritism from the refs that his teams have been getting over the years? And while I don’t think Duke operates on the ethical edge like outlaw programs such Uconn and Kentucky, they are not as pristine as Vitale and the media make them.

Just noticed you're from Ohio...now I see where you're coming from. Sorry your own "icon of nobility" was a hypocrital used-car salesman. But don't project that onto everyone else...

Oh, don't worry . . . I've lost a great deal of respect for OSU, but my lack of respect for JoePa goes back years ago when he said that dishonesty was ok . . . and that sports builds character. Ain't seen a lot of character in sports for a long time.
