There have been a lot of stories written about this Q&A the past week. It should be interesting to finally see it. One point that Paterno tries to hammer home is his continued call for Freshman ineligibility for football.

Three thoughts:

I love JoePa, but I’d love to see him retire on top.

Without a split offense of some variety, it is almost impossible to compete - which we do not have.

And I’d love to see a nationwide search for a top coach when JoePa retires, instead of appointing JayPa.

I lost a lot of respect for JoePa a few years ago when he tried to tell the public that sports builds character with the observation that if a player, for instance, traps a football catch . . . and knows he trapped it . . . it's ok to let the ref rule it a catch even if the referee really missed it . . . . Obviously, the player will let the illegal catch be a catch if the referee says so, but the whole thing is dishonest from the beginning.

While we all know why the player will let the referee make the mistake, Joe could not equate that event with just plain honesty.

On the other hand, if the coach says it's ok to let the referee make an obvious mistake, then why in the hell does a coach bitch like hell when he disagrees with the call?

It all boils down to "what you can get away with," and the OSU problem with Terrell Prior, et al., is a clear example of "what you can get away with."

The NCAA, almost the college coaches, and players have lost what little respect I had for the whole bunch.

Did they ask Krzyzewski about the ridiculous favoritism from the refs that his teams have been getting over the years? And while I don’t think Duke operates on the ethical edge like outlaw programs such Uconn and Kentucky, they are not as pristine as Vitale and the media make them.
