Technically, a tragedy is the downfall of a hero who has one flaw that leads to his fated and inevitable demise.

But now it apparently means any event that anyone perceives as sad.

It frustrated me that 9/11 was continually referred to as a "tragedy" when it was, in reality, an atrocity.

Same here. I think the word "tragedy" is used because no one wants to render a negative judgement on the actions of a drunk driver.

I also hate it when people misuse the word. A talented artist who can’t overcome an addiction would be a case properly called tragic. However, a school bus filled with children that drives off a cliff is a calamity.
