I have an M-44 with the attached folding bayonet. Its big fun, and the fireball and noise is impressive.
I tell people it’s the only rifle that can shoot, skewer, and cook your food all at once LOL.

5.45x39 should be compared to 5.56x54.
7.62x54r should be compared to .30-'06, 7.62x51, .303 Brit etc.

I liked mine so much I bought two more. The way I saw it I've outfitted me, the wife, and a trusted friend with proven, kick-ass battle rifles for less than $300.00. Toss in a tin of ammo for each of us and I'm still under $600.00
Try that with any 30-06 or .308 platform.
Are they pretty? Nope. Are they rough? Yep. Do they go "bang" every time? Yep. Will they kill almost anything on the North American continent with a single well placed round? You're damn right they will.
Best,
L

The article said:"If I asked you to tell me what was the most important rifle ever used in Russia, what would it be? Many people might answer: the AK-47.
To which I replied not me I would say the AK-74.

Ditto. I’ll hang on to my AK 74. Can’t get around those dual 30 round bannana clips. Or the 100 round drum.

To which I replied ... True, you did so reply. It's a defensible proposition.
Your comment on the price of ammo seemed to be heading in a different direction ... my comment has to do with comparing like to like.

Same here... Too many dies already. I am a reloader also but I get my 7.62X54R for $75 with shipping. 440 round spam cans made in the late 70's and 1980's. Copper washed steel cases; just throw them away. Total cost about 17 cents per round. Can't reload them for that price.
The darned things are FUN to shoot.

I have one and that 8mm round can thump a target quite handily.

However, it was the Mosin-Nagant rifle that drove Nazis from the Motherland. The same rifle guarded the Czars, and later deposed them. That's why I bought one (actually two, because they were just giving them away). Such a cool piece of history.

I’ve seen, handled and shot Mosin’s. I still don’t understand the fascination with them.

"Its the same reason I never bought a .303 Enfield. Ill stick with the 30-06 and .308." Amen.
I have an M1 Garand in each caliber (another Garand in .243 followed me home from the gunsmith one day, so taking in a lonely stray doesn't count as an extra caliber, right?).
