I’ve had AVG and Avast. I’m far happier with Microsoft Security Essentials. Avast was good but the constant announcements of updates was annoying.

You can set those to silent, and no pop-up. Mine is silent, and I just set it on a small 2 second pop-up notice.

That can be turned off/disabled in the preferences/options section.

I tried Avast 6, but they added their own sandbox. It conflicts with the program called Sandboxie. I hate that, as I like Sandboxie. I reinstalled Avast 5 -- I just hope they continue to support it.
