LADWIN, Mich. – A tour company based in northern Michigan has been ordered by federal transportation officials to cease operations and take its coaches out of service after six people were found traveling in the luggage compartment of bus in Ohio.
The operations out-of-service order named Roger Haines and Haines Tours of Gladwin.
Issued Friday by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the order claims that on May 27 an Ohio State Highway Patrol officer found six of 62 passengers in a luggage area during an inspection of a bus traveling from Roscommon, Mich., to Clyde, Ohio.

Was this some kind of practice for smuggling illegal aliens?

That’s what I thought. We are being turned into a Third World country before our very own eyes.
I’m guessing folks were desperate to ride from X to Y, and the bus company offered a half-price deal on the spot...and some guys just took the deal.
It could be, or maybe whoever loads the luggage into the compartments was looking to make a little extra money, and after cutting in the driver and whomever else needed greasing, went ahead with the plan. I’d guess if they checked records of the people riding like that, they’d find interesting things in any event though.
I guess they were riding “coach.”
Back in the 1980s....I was stationed in Germany and did these long-distance tours to Spain and Italy. We had a driver pull up once...who was going to share driving duties with another guy and make a straight run to the south coast of Spain.
He showed me this rigged up sleeping bunk underneath...where the spare driver was always sleeping. It was fixed up, had a fan pumping in fresh air...refrigerator...and a nice mattress. I thought it was a swell idea myself. Guess that would be illegal here in the US.
Probably, under the current red-tape dispensers we have as our leaders. But it sounds like a good idea, one that beats truckers on ephedra or whatever they’re using these days.
Yes. There is a heavy influx of illegal Canadians trying to sneak into northern Michigan via Sarnia. I hear they give survivors a case of Molson Lite and 2 free tickets to a Red Wings game.
Is there something about Michigan law limiting bus companies operating there from operating anywhere else?
Plus, you’ve got to keep an eye on those hosers from Soviet Canuckistan, eh? Maybe it was the smell of maple syrup and beaver-tails that really gave them away in this case.
