Posted on 06/10/2011 9:50:51 PM PDT by Jim 726

HAWTHORNE, Fla. -- A 74-year-old man attacked by pit bulls Friday morning had his right arm amputated, his left arm partially amputated and suffered severe facial injuries, Putnam County deputies said. Deputies were called to the 200 block of Old Hawthorne Road in Hawthorne about 11 a.m. and found Roy McSweeney severely injured. McSweeney was taken to Shands Hospital in Gainesville and was in surgery Friday afternoon. His condition was not available. Investigators said the two dogs responsible for the attack belonged to McSweeney's neighbor.

They said the owner of the dogs gave both of them to authorities, and the pit bulls were euthanized and taken to the Putnam County Health Department to be tested for rabies.

Deputies said no further details could be released. .

Darks, most of these PETA types are in the bag by this time of day anyway; either cheap wine or Prozac whichever their Dr. Feelgood prescribes.

“You are really not improving the stereotype that many have of what pit owners are like.

Take a look at your posts, they look like statements from some kind of gang banger. Very little self control and maturity is evident.”

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I have been noticing the profile of the pro pit lobby along similar lines. For example, about a week ago there was a thread about a pit bull that killed and ate a baby. What did the pro pit lobby think was most appropriate to post? Oh, things like a picture of a baby playing with a pit. See their compassion? Perhaps they wanted to illustrate the size disparity between babies and pit bulls so we could imagine the scene just before the pit bull killed and ate part of the baby...after being fed dog food. And of course they took the opportunity to moan about the unfair rep that pit bulls have...on a thread where a pit killed a baby.

And again, we have another pit bull spontaneously mutilates someone-thread posted on FR. The pro pit lobby shows up and feels it’s most appropriate to...talk about themselves, their own dogs, their own feelings, thoughts etc. Oh and naturally, claim that the dog has a false reputation - on a thread where two pits jumped a fence to maim an elderly disabled man. But the posts are mostly narcissistic in nature - they go on about themselves and their dogs (same thing) for post after post - why it’s like a party posting on a thread of pit bulls jumping a fence and trying to kill a disabled elderly man.
On poster showing up late lamented coming ‘late to the party’! I mean, ripping one man’s arm apart so bad it had to be amputated and actually ripping the other arm all the way off the man, and mauling his face of course, is like ‘Miller Time’ party atmosphere for the pro pit lobby - time to get out the family photos and kick back bragging about themselves...uh...I mean their dogs. And play martyr - yes, even on a thread detailing the latest spontaneous attack on humans by pit bulls, whine about the bad rep these dogs get!
Time for pit lovers to posture as tough and superior - what else would we expect them to post on a thread detailing pit bull carnage? Some post pictures of themselves in self important ‘tough’ poses! Perfect timing! ‘74 year old man ripped apart by dogs...’ Hey let’s post pictures of ourselves and then pictures of our dogs! PARTY!

There is a psychological study that found that people like the pro pit lobby interpret criticism of their dog as a direct blow to their egos - this must be why the pro pits flock to ‘pit kills person’ threads - time to talk up themselves and their dogs and of course, talk down anyone who objects to pits killing more people than any other breed. That’s why the ‘tough hombre’ posturing - didn’t have a live pit bull present to support their ‘powerful’ identity so they’ll have to use pointless posturing for now. In fact, if necessary, the suggestion that the breed should be euthanized may even be intentionally distorted into a personal threat (well they are relying on that dog breed to represent their ego) to go to someone’s house and kill the dog yourself! Well, they couldn’t exactly refute anything you said within reasonable discourse so they are going to have to distort what you meant. See they LIKE how that dog breed makes them feel so it doesn’t matter how many people, whether babies or 74 year olds, are killed and maimed - they want to keep the status quo. They do this on the internet too, of course, show up on pages detailing pit-kills-human to whine about their ‘Dogs of Peace’ like CAIR whines about racial profiling of Muslims who try to ignite their shoes on airliners.
So the latest ‘you wanna come kill my dog’ type post which exposes the feeble psychology behind those who NEED this breed to establish their egos is a perfect illustration.

Mojitojoe, I'm not some sort of pit bull fan (I think they're ugly) but why are you, as a conservative, advocating more government regulation of private property, which is what dogs are?

I totally get where you're coming from about being mad that your tenants broke their lease by bringing something onto your property that you forbade and thereby forcing you to evict them. Good call. It's your property, you set the rules, and that's your right — and if they broke that rule, they will probably break others. Same for your insurance company; they're a private business and if you want low rates you need to follow rules they believe will minimize risk, whether perceived or real. That's legitimate. If I own a high-dollar sports car I can expect to pay higher rates since a certain percentage of drivers will decide to treat the interstate as a racetrack, merely because they can, and therefore insurance companies have to charge higher rates to everybody owning that type of car or maybe refuse to insure some types of vehicles at all.

But that's up to them. I don't want government telling private landowners or private insurance companies what to do with their business decisions.

Does that decision make sense, however?

Your statistic shows that 33 fatal dog attacks happened in 2010, and of those, 22 were by pit bulls and four by Rottweilers, making 79 percent of fatal attacks by those two breeds.

That sounds awful, except that there are probably tens of thousands of pit bulls in the United States, and if 22 were involved in fatal attacks (were any of them defending their own property, and therefore legitimate attacks?) that is a minuscule percentage of the pit bull population.

It seems obvious that most owners of potentially aggressive dogs don't raise them to direct that aggression against anyone except maybe a burglar trying to get in the house. A well-trained German Shepherd is capable of doing as much if not more damage than a pit bull if commanded to attack and trained to do so. What's wrong with saying that owners need to maintain control of their dogs, and suffer the penalties if the dog does something wrong?

Especially in dangerous neighborhoods, having a well-trained dog can serve the same purpose as owning a gun, and when the resident isn't home, a dog is a good alternative to a security system because it deters crime, not just alerts the police once the break-in happens. There's a place for an aggressive dog, as long as the owner knows how to control it.

If owners won't or can't keep their dog under control, that's a whole different ball game.

Darksheare posted on Saturday, June 11, 2011 2:31:23 PM: “According to New York state my previous cat [d. 1999] was an ‘illegal F1 feral’ and if she’d been recognized as what she was the state would have confiscated her, euthanized her and then billed me for the privilege of having the state kill my pet. And then charge me for the crime of having a cat give birth to domestic bobcat crossbreeds on my back porch.”

Bobcat crossbreeds? Great! I’ve known a number of people who (legally) own exotic crossbreed cats, and since I live in a rural area I’ve heard of unplanned bobcat crossbreeds though I’ve never seen one of those that has been subjected to actual DNA testing to see if it’s a real bobcat crossbreed. On the true crossbreeds, especially if bottlefed from shortly after birth and then fed regularly by hand into young adulthood, they often become fiercely loyal pets to the human they think is their mom and their meal ticket.

Kind of nice having a furry warm meowing cat with the personality of a dog. Given enough time and some scientific breeding, it might be possible to promote a new breed with the good traits (loyalty and territorial defense) without the problematic traits of a wildcat.

That’s not unlike what our ancestors did to get rid of the bad traits of wolves and whatever wildcat species predates the domestic cat to create our current concept of a domestic cat and domestic dog.

I probably ought to go on the internet before posting things from my personal experience that would be better documented by citing weblinks.

Here's some quick stuff about cat crossbreeds. It pretty much confirms my own experience about crossbreeds closely bonding with their “mom” and being fiercely loyal, as well as having high intelligence, “wild” habits such as headbutting people and jumping 8 feet or more into the air, and vocalizations which are nothing like a domestic cat.

I didn't know it, but apparently the Serval-domestic crossbreed actually **HAS** been recognized as a legitimate crossbreed:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savannah_(cat)

... and here's a wildcat sanctuary which takes crossbreeds that cannot legally be adopted and would have to be euthanized:

http://www.wildcatsanctuary.org/residents/hybrid-domestic/bengals-savannahs-chausies/

For people who think pit bulls are scary because of their looks, go look at those pictures and imagine a 20-pound ball of fur cuddling up with you on a cold winter night because it thinks you're its mom. I can't see any better reason to outlaw these crossbreed cats than to outlaw a pit bull — i.e., there isn't any good reason.

You’re talking to somebody dog-body-language-illiterate enough to intentionally -stare- at a Dobe, which is the universal dog-code for challenge to battle, thereby provoking perfectly normal dog behavior, via a growl, while it *was* minding its own business, you know.

You seriously expect it to have any other useful Dobermann knowledge?
[or real, practical dog knowledge, at all, frankly]

I just hope to God that it never, -ever- owns another Dobe.

Talk about “people who want to look cool without knowing what they’re doing”.

*There* is the root of all your dog bite disasters.

Starting your pseudo-psychological profiling off with an outright lie sort of neutralizes the rest of it.
