Looking for a new 9mm (vanity)
Posted on 06/10/2011 7:29:23 PM PDT by gop4lyf
I am going to a gun show on Sunday and I have narrowed it down to 4 choices. I am not looking for a concealed/carry model since it will be for range shooting and home defense only. I also am not looking for a higher caliber, 9mm only. Does anyone have and experience/opinions on any of these? any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I’m no expert but I’d personally lean towards the XD or the SR9.
That said, have you considered a Glock 17/19, Smith & Wesson M&P or one of the less expensive Rugers?
FYI we have two Browning Hi-Powers and a CZ75 (not B) for 9’s. Next on the wishlist are a S&W M&P and a FN Herstal FNX in .40 and a 1911 (maybe a TAURUS). A Kel-Tec P9 and a Taurus .22 revolver are on the list as well.

I looked at the FNP and FNX but the trigger pull on DA is so high that it really turned me off. Otherwise, that is probably what I would be buying.

“Also, to those .45 elitists on this thread: Would you care to volunteer in taking a few rounds in the chest with my puny 9mm?”
No thank you. However, I have heard of at least one instance where a woman was shot in the head with a 9mm and lived. Also, this report indicates that .45 caliber is the way to go:

I love the FNH. The Springfield XD9 is crap in comparison.

Strangers on the internet are not what I would consider a reliable source of information about firearms. Everyone with an smidgeon of testosterone wants to be the expert.
My 2 cents:
Find a gun range here:
http://maps.google.com/maps?q=gun%20ranges, maybe take a class, rent and shoot a bunch of different types, and then buy the one you like the best. Just be sure to test it until you're confident that it will be reliable.
You wouldn't ask a people on the internet to help you pick out a pair of tennis shoes and buying a gun isn't much different from that.

I carry one and it felt heavy til I showed it to a guy who had some brand of 9MM and it felt like is was cast iron. He couldnt believe how light the Beretta was.

It’s not too bad with the Supertuck IWB holster. Just ordered another one for my Springfield XDM .45.
